Voices… there are too many voices. I need to hear hers.

I look at her. She’s a ball of light… my light. Always and forever.

“Angel,” I croak.

“Tiero, please. I love you. Don’t leave me. Please!” Her voice sounds distant and spoken through a watery substance.

I don’t want to leave her, but the darkness is getting heavier.

There’s warmth on my body, anchoring me, keeping me here.

“Ella,” a familiar voice says. “You need to let him go.” Burg… I trust him. He loves her.

I force my eyes to find him. He’s standing next to my angel.

My energies are fading, seeping from my body, but I need his help. Gathering what little strength I have left, I push out, “Keep… her… safe… Promise…me.” Each word is weaker than the next, my throat closing over.

“You’re not handing me over to another man,” Ella sobs. “You will fight for us. You hear me!”

My eyes stay on him, waiting. “I swear,” Burg promises solemnly, his eyes earnest.

It’s all I need.

The warmth on my body leaves. It allows the darkness to swallow me up.

Chapter Fifty-Six

Ella

Intheblinkofan eye, my world has been shattered into a thousand pieces.

Tiero’s been in surgery for over two hours. There’s been no news. But that’s a good sign, isn’t it?

The longer this takes, the better the chances the surgery is a success… at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

For the first hour of waiting, I was frozen. Completely numb. No tears, no thoughts. Just utter emptiness inside me.

Everything seemed dull and muted. Even the brilliant blue sky and sunshine outside the window was lackluster. But again, I took the good weather as a positive sign.

If Tiero wasn’t pulling through, the sky would be grey and rainy, right?

That’s what it’s like in the movies and books. The weather always matches the mood. It’s gotta be true in real life too.

Ineedit to be true!

Dr. Smith was there and led me to an examination room, Claudette and Aiden by my side. Antonio wanted to join us too, but I made him wait outside.

He’s the last person I want around me, but he’s in charge of my security until further notice. Being the highest ranking of Tiero’s men, he’s taken over until he gets instructions from Mateo.

Icy disbelief numbed my senses as Dr. Smith checked me over. I was unharmed except for my injured arm. Luckily, the bullet didn’t penetrate but only grazed it, tracing a scorched furrow in my skin.

The sight of the bleeding wound made my stomach turn, and I had to look away when Dr. Smith cleaned it and applied a few stitches. Then the orthopaedic doctor placed a padded splint on my arm to stabilize the fracture, instructing me to get a new plaster fitted once the wound has healed and the risk of infection has gone.

The pain in my arm is still throbbing, but it’s nothing compared to the pain in my heart.

I can’t imagine a life without Tiero in it.

As this realization sinks in, the dam on my emotions breaks, reducing me to convulsive sobs.
