“I saw it blow up.”

Chapter Fifty-Seven

Ella

Myholdonthebasin tightens, my legs like shaky pillars beneath me.

“The car blew up in your vision?” I repeat, my voice quivering as much as my legs.

“Yes. Aiden has since managed to search the SUV and found a bomb. It was set to go off about ten minutes into your journey.”

Oh. My. God.

Nausea hits me full force, and I scramble into a stall and fling open the toilet lid, throwing up the little food I managed to eat.

Claudette rushes in after me, rubbing my back.

When nothing more is coming up, I sit on the floor and lean against the wall. I swallow hard on the foul taste of bile as the ramifications of this new piece of information sink in.

“That car would have blown up with us in it. If it wasn’t for that shooting, we’d be dead now,” I mumble, my words slurring together as my entire body shakes.

This is unbelievable!

One disaster prevented another one. And that one we wouldn’t have survived.

“Except that I wouldn’t have let you get into that car,” Claudette reassures me. “But Ella, do you see now how serious this is? Somebody is trying to kill Tiero, you and the baby. And theywilltry again until the job is finished.”

Fear travels into every crevice of my being. Claudette is right. Whoever is targeting us is determined to wipe us out. And someone in heaven is looking out for us.

“Aiden has been working with Carl on a plan to get you out of here.”

I open my mouth to reply, but Claudette holds up her finger as if to stop me from speaking. That’s okay. No words would have left my throat anyway. My mind is a blank mess.

“Aiden promised Tiero to keep you safe. So let him,” she implores. “It’s what Tiero wants.”

My eyes search hers. They’re full of compassion and determination. She’s right. Tiero wouldn’t hesitate to move me to a secure location.

A heavy ache settles in my chest, and my eyes begin to sting. I don’t want to leave him behind.

“He handed me over to Ade as if…” my voice disappears into my body, and I have to force myself to continue. “… as if…” No, I can’t say it.

I take a deep breath in. “Do you think Tiero thought he was dying?” I finally force out, the words not wanting to leave my mouth.

Claudette takes me into her arms. “That man loves you fiercely. He’ll be fighting death just so he can be with you.”

“You really believe that?”

“I do. And he’s stubborn and persistent enough to succeed.”

I hug her tighter. She’s given me an anchor to hold on to, and I’ll grab it and not let go.

She pulls away and cradles my face in her hands, piercing me with her gaze. “Now listen carefully. I will bring you up to speed with the plan. This is what’s going to happen…”

Then she lays out the details of how to get me out from under the nose of my Mafioso guards. My eyes widen more than once. I’m not sure if I can pull this off.

“We will wait until after the surgery to set the plan in motion, but no matter the outcome, youwillleave, okay?”

I stare at her, reluctant to agree. I turn on the water and wash my hands, trying to buy myself some time. That’s when something occurs to me.
