And she and I will create a wonderful life together. That’s if peanut turns out to be a girl—my faith in Claudette’s prediction is currently non-existent.
While I’ll never experience love and passion like I had with Tiero and, to some degree, Aiden, I can devote my life to her.
It will all be fine, right?
With a sigh and a heavy heart, I get out of the car. The air is freezing, carrying with it the earthy scent of fallen leaves. My breath forms visible plumes, reminding me of a steam engine as I walk up the stairs to the front door.
It flies open, startling the living daylights out of me. I clutch my chest to calm my racing heart.
Then a dark figure steps out, and my breath falters.
Oh my god!
How?
Chapter Sixty-Three
Ella
“Darling!Iwasbeginningto get worried you got lost.”
My jaw hits the ground.
I blink a few times, certain I’m imagining things. I must be more tired than I thought.
So I pinch myself.
No, not dreaming.
On the front porch stands Claudette in all her glory.
“Claudette,” I cry out. A combination of relief and guilt hitting me all at once.
After leaving the hospital today, I never expected to see her again.
“Ella, darling.” She rushes down the stairs and throws her arms around me.
I hug her to me. “I’m so sorry I lashed out at you.”
“Darling, forget about it. You’re grieving. Anger is natural. I knew you didn’t mean it. We’re good.”
I can’t believe she’s really standing in front of me.
“How are you here?” I ask, in shock.
“You didn’t really think I would abandon you, did you? I can’t let you be here by yourself after all that’s happened,” she says, chuckling.
“I’m so glad you’re here.” I hiccup, because let’s face it. In this scenario, I never stood a chance to keep the tears at bay.
“Was that part of Ade’s plan all along? Is he coming too? And why are you wearing this?” I ask, pointing at her clothes.
Instead of her colorful, flowing kaftan dress she insists on wearing even in freezing temperatures, she’s dressed in a light-blue nurses’ outfit.
“So many questions…. I promise I will answer them all. But let’s go inside and warm up.” We climb the stairs arm in arm.
Despite my grief, seeing Claudette has put a smile on my face.
“So what’s with the outfit?” I ask again as Claudette closes the door behind us and turns the lock.
