I wish I knew how he was taking it. He seemed shocked, but too tired to respond.

Now I’m left wondering and fretting until he wakes up again.

What if he wasn’t ready for this ultimate move? What if his plan to get out looked very different, and this messed up his strategy? Who am I kidding? It’s bound to have done just that.

I study Tiero’s expression for any hints on what’s going on in his head. But I detect nothing. His face is once again relaxed and at peace.

A soft knock on the door has me straightening up. Dr. Broad Back enters the room and quietly walks over.

“How is our patient? I see he has gone back to sleep. I’m surprised he stayed awake for as long as he did. Normally in cases like these, the body demands rest after only a few minutes. Your fiancé is strong, and he’s determined. It will help him heal faster.”

Doctor Pros… Broad Back checks Tiero’s vitals and adjusts his medication.

“Gualtiero will likely be out for a few hours. You should get something to eat and have a rest too. All of this emotional strain is going to take its toll otherwise. You need to look after yourself, especially in your condition,” he tells me.

“I’m not tired,” I reply. “And I’ll eat something soon. I just need to stay with him a little while longer.”

“I understand. But it’s okay to step away. Your fiancé is doing well. Claudette and I can take turns watching over him and call you when he wakes up.”

I nod, but I have no intention of leaving Tiero’s side. Never again… he’s stuck with me.

After the doctor leaves the room, I walk over to the window and stare out at the stunning Alaskan landscape. I’m so glad to be back in the mountains. I couldn’t imagine a better place to recuperate.

Tiero being used to the Mediterranean climate would disagree with me. If asked where he’d want to go to disconnect from the world, he’d say his island. I let out a long sigh. We can never go back there.

It’s only early afternoon, but the sun is already tracking low in the sky, coloring the mountain backdrop in soft hues. I’ve said it before, but there’s just something about the serenity you only find in the mountains. And this scenery is as good as it gets.

I could easily spend the rest of my life here. At least I think I could… let’s see if I still feel that way when winter is over.

Could Tiero be happy here? Life as he knows it has been ripped away from him.

Even though he told me he was going to leave the mafia life behind, in the end, it wasn’t his decision. It was made for him. Would I have agreed to it had I known about Aiden’s plan?

I would have been tempted.

It solved our problems after all. Nobody is chasing us anymore, and our child will be able to grow up normally. It’s all I ever wanted for her.

But will Tiero be happy when the full extent of the consequences sinks in? What will he do with his time when he doesn’t have to run a crime empire and eliminate enemies? There’s only so much sex two people can have.

Clinking noises from the door make me turn around. Claudette enters, carrying a tray of food.

“You need to eat, darling,” she declares softly. She’s not wrong. I’ve eaten little since the shooting.

She puts the tray down on the little round table for two by the window, and I sit down with a drawn-out sigh.

“You seemed deep in thought when I came in. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah.” I spear a piece of sweet potato onto my fork, spinning it in my hand. “I told Tiero he’s officially dead and out of the Mafia.”

“Oh. How did that go down?”

“I don’t know. He fell asleep.”

“And now you’re worrying unnecessarily, aren’t you?”

She knows me so well. “Why did Aiden do it?” I ask.

Claudette cocks her head to the side, furrowing her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”
