But even if Tiero welcomed our daughter, his world wouldn’t.

I’m not doing that to her.

There’s no going back. The road ahead may be uncertain, but I’m determined to forge a new path, one that doesn’t lead me back to Tiero.

“All clear, ladies. Sorry for the last-second change of plans.” Aiden’s familiar voice has me looking up.

Our eyes connect.

There’s so much going on in his. A mix of relief, concern, and something else I find hard to decipher. But it makes my heart flutter.

He steps closer, his hand reaching out to help me up. Hesitating for a moment, I take it. The warmth of his touch sends shivers through my body, and I’m torn between leaning in closer and pulling away.

Argh.

My emotions are all over the place.

How can I feel drawn to him when my heart aches for Tiero?

As if sensing my inner struggle, Claudette looks between Aiden and me.

I told her about him this morning, and now she gets to see firsthand what I was on about.

The urge to bury my head in my hands and hide away is strong.

It’s like I’m powerless against the energy that swirls to life whenever Aiden or Tiero are near.

“Why didn’t we take the car?” Claudette asks, interrupting our moment.

Thank you!

Aiden looks at her, confused, as if he had forgotten about her.

“Umm… car, right,” he mutters.

“I figured De Marco would assume Ella is in the pickup and follow the car. His hacker will most likely access traffic cameras, CCTV, etcetera, making it difficult to get away.”

Aiden’s voice has regained its usual confidence. Whatever was going on for him a second ago, has passed.

“Carl has a surprise up his sleeve, but there’s always a chance De Marco will follow the right car, and we need to disappear off his radar.”“The right car?” Claudette asks, voicing my question.

“Yes, there are three identical pickups with the same number plate joining Marni’s as soon as she leaves the harbor area. And at the next intersection, they all go in different directions. De Marco won’t find it easy to track them all. I’m counting on him noticing too late that you’re not in any of them.”

“Tiero could have left men behind here instead of taking them all along. That was quite a gamble,” I say, realizing what a high-stakes game we’re playing. “There’s probably plenty left around the docks.”

“Which is why we need to keep moving or we lose the advantage we gained,” Aiden says, his expression solemn.

Claudette and I follow him as he hurries down a small path to the water’s edge.

“Is Marni going to be all right?” I ask, trying to keep up with his long strides. I hate that another innocent person got involved in this because of me.

“She’ll be fine. She’s taking a few detours to the airport. The jet is ready to take her back to Atlanta as soon as she gets there,” Aiden replies, his eyes continuously scanning our surroundings.

“What’s the plan now?” I ask, but he doesn’t respond.

“Aiden, is there a plan?” I rephrase my question.

“Of course,” he says with confidence.
