“I met someone,” I said tersely.

Keely’s smile widened to the point I knew it hurt her cheeks. “Who—”

“Doesn’t matter because she’s gone. I don’t have her number. I don’t know her last name. She was just passing through.”

“Have you tried to search her—”

“Yes, I used your phone when you weren’t looking—”

“Pete!”

“What?”

Keely gave me an exasperated look and scoffed.

“I don’t have Facebook or whatever the hell—”

“So, you have actually tried to find her?” she asked gently, her voice dropping to a soft whisper.

I hated the way she was looking at me right now.

“Yeah.”

Keely swallowed, her eyes fixing on mine. “And that’s why you’ve been moping—”

“I haven’t been moping around. I don’t know why everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because you are,” she snorted. “I thought it was because of me and George getting married but, well, you’re just in love.”

“I am not in love.”

“Yeah, okay.”

“Keely, I’m only telling you so you’ll shut up and leave me alone about it.”

She rolled her eyes and smirked at me. “I bet she’ll come back—”

“I don’t think so,” I replied, the truth of it sitting heavy on my shoulders as I turned back to my work.

Keely’s silence was deafening as I fought for focus. Eventually, she sighed heavily and I stole a glance at her over my shoulder.

“What, Keely?”

“I just want to see you as happy as I am—”

“Settling down and starting a family isn’t what I’ve ever wanted for my life,” I cut in, but the words didn’t ring as true as they normally had. “If I’d wanted that, I would’ve straightened myself out a decade ago. I would’ve married Emma Burken, or someone like that.”

She wrinkled her nose and snorted. I smirked.

“Or Emma’s older sister. Nowshewas a babe—”

“You’re a dog,” Keely chided.

“Exactly. Don’t worry about me or hassle me with incessant questions about my sex life.”

“Okay, gross—”

“I’m fine, Keely. Really.” Maybe not now, but I would be.
