“Did you have fun?”

“I did.”

“You—” She paused, and another glance in her direction caught the blush on her cheeks. “You put your arm around my chair.”

“I was stretching.”

“Mhm…” She smiled, eyes twinkling in the dark. “I don’t mind that, you know.”

“Me putting my arm around your chair?”

“Just touching me in general.”

I arched my brow at her again and felt that warmth beginning to spread across my chest.

“Are you flirting with me, Sierra Gold?”

“Are you okay with that, Pete Greenway?”

Her eyes narrowed into cat-like slits as she grinned at me. Beautiful. So fucking beautifulit almost hurt to look at her.

I looked back at the road before I accidently killed us both by being distracted and missed her shifting her weight in her seat. I turned my head when I felt movement near the side of my face and just missed the way her lips brushed against my cheek. She sucked in a breath, panic flashing in hers as she slumped back into her seat.

“I’m sorry—”

“Did you just kiss my cheek?”

“Yeah, I did,” she whispered, hugging herself with her arms. “I don’t know why but I wanted to. I just—”

I pulled the truck over so fast she yelped. I turned to her, my heart racing in my chest as I gave myself only one second to change my mind…

I didn’t think. My mind was blank. I reached for her, taking her hand in mine, and then I leaned over the center console andkissed her. Not a peck. Not a brush over her cheek. But a real, hungry, desperate kiss. She exhaled sharply and tangled her fingers in my hair, pulling me closer, opening those full, gorgeous lips for me to explore with my tongue. I felt like my skin was on fire as I ran my hand down her back and up again, my fingers curling around the back of her neck as I kissed, and kissed, and kissed her.

But we both pulled away at the same time, a mirror image of shock and awe on our faces.

“I—” I said, but I had nothing to say, honestly. “I’m not going to apologize for that.”

“Good,” she said quickly, licking her lips before turning back to the windshield.

“Good,” I parroted, slightly out of breath. Why had I done that? Kissing her was going to complicate everything about this already complicated situation. I cleared my throat and pulled the truck back onto the road while my heart raced.

Kissing her felt right. Easy.Natural.

I wanted to do it again, and never stop.

“I have to go deal with something at the bar for a while,” I said when the silence became too heavy.

“Do you want me to come with you?” she asked with a yawn.

I gave her a half smile, noticing the way her eyelids fluttered as the lights from Hot Springs sparkled into view in the distance.

“Don’t worry about it. I got it handled.”

And I did handle it. I talked to the sheriff and sent them on their way. I trudged upstairs at two in the morning to find Sierra awake and getting a glass of water in the dark. We met each other’s eyes and maybe, just maybe, a silent understanding passed between us.

Because when I climbed into bed that night after stripping down naked, she climbed in next to me and settled her head on my chest.

There were no expectations between us, I realized, only that we were in this together, feeling the same kind of feelings for each other. There was no rush, and I fell asleep with her in my arms, feeling… full, for the first time in my life.
