“Me neither, but it’ll be over soon. I promise. Who knows? Maybe they’re on their way right now, and in a few hours this will be over. We can wake up tomorrow without having to worry about it anymore.”

“Don’t threaten me with a good time.” She chuckled, but her words were heavy with the same stress I felt at the thought.

We finished our show, but our hands started move over our bodies beneath the blankets. I kissed her neck and shoulders, dipping my hands beneath the waistband of her pants. She let out that little gasp I loved when I touched her hot, feverish skin between her thighs. I wanted her, badly. Bad enough to start pulling down her pants over her thick thighs and helping myself.

But just as I lowered myself between her thighs, my mouth hovering over her navel, I heard a car pull up around back, and heavy footsteps on the metal stairs leading to the entrance to my apartment. I paused, looking up at her in the dark.

“Did you jinx us for real?” she rasped, her face glowing in the blue light of the TV screen. She was flushed with color, a prickle of sweat lining her brow.

Part of me was excited that her mother had shown up again when I had Sierra in this kind of state.

But a harsh knock on the door told me it wasn’t Sierra’s mother coming to collect her, no.

“Get dressed,” I whispered, kissing her soundly before standing up and righting my own clothes.

I turned on the lights and ran my fingers through my hair, biding my time so Sierra could get herself ready for company, and what I assumed was bad news.

Because Grant and Dego wouldn’t come here in the middle of the night for just anything. This wasn’t another gathering around the kitchen island over ice cream.

Something happened.

“Come in,” I said.

Chapter Thirty

Sierra

Grant and Dego entered the apartment under the cover of darkness in the middle of the night. Heavy autumn rain was turning into thick slush ushered in by cold weather. Grant’s shoulders were soaked as he shrugged off his jacket and hung it by the door.

Pete rose from the couch, crossing his arms over his chest as he walked across the room.

“What’s this all about?” he asked a morose-looking Grant and expressionless Dego.

I sat up a little straighter. My heart picked up speed as I glanced from man to man. Pete had jinxed our quiet night, I realized, and judging by the looks on their faces, these men weren’t here to share ice cream with me this time.

They were here because something had happened.

“I was actually on my way to take Dego to his hotel when I got a call from one of my guys in Bozeman,” Grant said with a sigh, running his fingers through his hair. “Sorry, it’s been a long night.”

“I’m leaving for California tomorrow,” Dego said, picking up where Grant left off. “I was under the impression the restraining order going into effect would stop the Golds from making any new moves on this town, but we just got word that a man meeting Jonah’s description was seen renting a car at the airport in Bozeman.”

I opened my mouth but whatever I planned to say failed to materialize on my tongue.

“The restraining order is only for Vera and Kline Gold,” Pete whispered, turning his head to look at me over his shoulder. “But it doesn’t cover Jonah.”

“He wouldn’t hurt anyone,” I said quickly, swallowing hard. “I’m s-sure of that.”

Grant looked exhausted.

Dego only shook his head and took a step forward. “We have some… information on Jonah that’s not exactly pretty.”

“What?” I asked, shocked. “His affairs? I already know that—”

“Mmm… That’s the least of it,” Dego cut in, his mouth pressing into a firm line.

I didn’t want to know. I didn’t care to know. That part of my life was over.

“He has no business in Montana other than getting to Sierra, so we have to assume he’s coming here,” Grant said after amoment. “Likely with your mother, Sierra, even though she’s not allowed within five-hundred feet of you or this building. She’ll lead him here.”
