Grant sheepishly opened the door to the guestroom. “Well, that was somewhat anticlimactic,” he mused.

To my great relief, Sierra laughed hysterically, throwing her head back.

“I think it’s over now,” I said, heaving a sigh as I ran my finger through my hair and ruffled the strands.

“I’m useless to them now, so it better be over.” She chuckled. “Oh, that felt good. Did you see the look on their faces?”

“Of course, I did.” I laughed, shaking my head.

The three of us stood in silence for a moment as the laughter faded. Grant rubbed his jaw, then looked down at the recorder.

“If they come back, or try anything, I think we have enough to set some legal things in motion, especially when it comes to your mother,” he said, grabbing his jacket. “I’m going head home and try to get some sleep.”

“Thank you, Grant. For everything,” Sierra said calmly as she stepped toward him. She wrapped him in a hug, and Grant melted against her for a moment before pulling away.

“I’ll touch base tomorrow,” he said as he fixed his cowboy hat on top of his head, then left.

I bent down to pick up the papers Vera had let fall to the ground and gathered them up, setting them lazily on the counter before turning to Sierra.

“It’s over.” She shrugged, her words meant only for herself.

“For them, yeah. But not for us.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m still in this, Sierra. I wasn’t pretending when I proposed to you. I want to get married to you. I want you to be my wife.”

Her mouth twitched into a smile, tears glistening in her eyes.

“I know. I just feel… I feel a lot lighter than I did a few hours ago. I think it’ll take some getting used to.

“I understand,” I said softly. “Are you ready to go to bed for a while?”

“Yes,” she breathed, nodding.

I followed her into the bedroom, locking the front door and turning off all the lights on my way in. Sierra crawled into bed and made herself comfortable. I stripped down, wanting nothing more than to feel her skin against mine.

Something was different about this now. I couldn’t quite place my finger on it as I crawled into bed beside my fiancée, my future wife, the mother of my child. I wrapped my body around hers so her back was flush with my chest.

My hand slid over her stomach and rested there, my fingers spread wide.

“I’m proud of you for standing up to them.”

“I love you,” she replied.

I kissed her neck, the back of her ear, then said, “I love you, too, Sierra.”

We fell asleep and didn’t stir until midday. It was a sunny, crisp autumn day when I finally opened my eyes and stretched out beside her.

She rolled over and caressed my cheek. “What now?” she whispered.

I sucked in a breath and sighed. “I think we need to get serious about a few things,” I said, my fingertips trailing down her spine. “But first… I just want to kiss you.”

Chapter Thirty-Two

Sierra

Aweek passed in relative peace and quiet. I hadn’t heard from my mother since the night she stormed out of Pete’s apartment with Jonah in tow.
