“I love you, Pete,” Sierra whispered so softly I almost missed it.

I turned to her, noticing the soft somberness behind her eyes.

We’d made it this far together. I loved her more than I’d realized was possible, but I knew deep down she still harbored a few shreds of deep regret that her parents hadn’t cared at all to witness this part of her life, to know their grandchild.

They were missing out. Sierra was the best mother and the best wife.

“I love you, sweetheart,” I said, embracing her and holding her to my chest until Sophie squawked in protest and grabbed a fistful of Sierra’s hair.

Sierra laughed, breaking that melancholy spell she’d fallen under.

“I think we should stop for ice cream on our way home,” I offered, which elicited a broad smile from my wife.

“Do you think she’s old enough to try ice cream yet?”

I shrugged. “I mean, she survived off of ice cream for nine months. She’s gotta know what it tastes like already.”
