“You don’t know where she went?”

“She said she was going home.”

“When was this?” His brain sounded an alarm bell. He should’ve seen her in the hallway.

“Hours ago. Right after I got here.”

“But you did see her again this evening, right?”

Mac looked up at him, frowning in thought. “No, but I don’t pay too much attention to anything else when I’m working.” His face brightened. “It’s going great. I broke through the AI’s refusal to recognize—”

“You’re saying that she didn’t come back here this evening. She would’ve been dressed up. In a dress. There’s no way you wouldn’t have noticed her.” The kid might be a geek, but he was still male.

“I haven’t seen her since right before lunch.”

“Fuck.”

“Is everything okay, Mr. Harker?”

“No, but I’ll handle it. Go back to work.” He raced down the hallway to the employees’ entrance. He burst into the garage where the staff parked and ran to the door to his personal garage. He punched in his keycode and stepped inside. Alison's car was gone.

Fuck. He hated smart women. He grabbed his phone and ran back to the house. His call went straight to voicemail and he almost slammed his phone against the wall when he heard the message.

Hi, sorry I can’t get to the phone right now. Leave a message unless you’re Harker. Then don't bother. Just go to hell but before you do that, I want you to know that I’m having a really, really good time.

He hung up and dialed Ellie's number. It also went straight to voicemail.

Hi, this is Ellie. Leave a message. If you’re Harker don’t bother unless you’re calling to say that you changed the contract. Then leave a message and I’ll see if I can pull Alison away from all the fun we’re having.

“You two think you’re so fucking funny,” he shouted at the phone. “You’re not. You’re not funny at all.” He dialed Adrian’s number.

“Hey Harker, what's up.” The TV blared in the background and it sounded like there was a crowd.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

“Oh…the noise.”

“Watching the fight.”

“Where’s Ellie? Where did she and Alison go?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

“What?” If his phone made it through the night without being smashed, he’d be surprised.

“If I tell you, I’ll be in as much shit as you’re in and I don’t want to sleep on the couch.”

“Adrian, I'm not fucking around. Tell me where they went.” The guy thought everything was a fucking joke.

“I'm not either. Ellie specifically told me…Actually, she told me not to answer your call, but I felt bad for you. The bro code, you know.”

“Not much of a code if you won’t help me.”

The guys shouted in the background.

“Hold on a second,” said Adrian.
