He tightened his grip on his daughter and started to step back, stopping when Alison’s small hand touched his shoulder.

“Harker, it’s time.” She wrapped her arm through his.

“Are you sure? She’s only six months old. She’s too young to be away from her parents.”

“She’ll be fine, and we deserve a few nights alone before we go on our honeymoon with our child.”

“I suppose.” He frowned at her.

“Don't sound so thrilled.” She laughed.

“That’s not what I meant.” He wanted time with just them, but… “I don't want to let her go.” He kissed his daughter’s cheek. Her skin was so soft, and she was so little and delicate.

“I know.” Alison stood on tiptoe, and he bent, kissing her. “That’s one of the things that I love most about you.”

“I’m going to need you to remember that because I’m never going to want to let her go, and neither of you are going to like my idea of at-home tutors through college.”

“Through college?” Her eyes widened and then she smiled mischievously. “That’ll be fine with both of us if he’s young and handsome.”

“Don’t even go there. Irene”—he kissed the baby—“is never dating. Ever.” He kissed Alison, his tongue slipping into her mouth as he fell into the kiss.

Estelle cleared her throat. “I should probably take the child before she sees things she shouldn’t.”

“That ship has already sailed,” he muttered against Alison’s mouth.

“Harker.” Alison slapped his arm before turning to her mother. “He’s lying.”

“I’m sure it’s you who’s lying,” said Aunt Tiff as Estelle took the baby from him.

“Don’t worry. She won’t remember.” Estelle’s eyes twinkled. “You didn’t.”

“Mom! You and Dad? While I was in the room?” Alison made a face and then laughed as she grabbed the diaper bag and handed it to her aunt.

“I’m so happy for both of you.” Aunt Tiff kissed Alison and then turned toward him.

He didn’t move as his wife’s aunt gave him a quick hug. He had no idea what to do. Besides Merri, he didn’t remember ever being touched by a woman in his adult life who he didn’t want to fuck. It was awkward and yet kind of nice. There was no expectation, just care.

The two older women left, and the house fell silent. They were alone for the first time in months. Just him and her. Him and his wife. “About that alone time.” He reached for her, but she backed away.

“Not yet. I have to go prepare. Remember?”

“We don't have to reenact everything from our first wedding.”

“Of course not. I’m not drunk and”—she grinned—"I certainly won't laugh at you.”

“Glad to hear that.” He stepped toward her. “We already did a wedding night redo. Remember?”

“That wasn’t a redo.” She backed away from him. “You called it that, but there is no way you would’ve spanked me on our wedding night.”

“Oh, I think I would’ve.” He took another step, stalking her toward the door.

“I disagree, but we can argue about that later.” She winked at him. “Maybe we can even make a bet.”

“I like where your mind is headed—to the gutter.”

“It was not.” She laughed. “You need to go and wait in the library. I would tell you to get Merri, Tobias, and Adrian, but since you found every excuse you could think of not to let my mom leave with the baby, everyone is gone.”

“Then there’s no reason for me to wait in the library. Let’s go to the bedroom.” He stepped closer to her.
