Alison stared at her computer. For the first time in her life she was unable to lose herself in her work. The conversation with Harker tore through her head, whipping her emotions into a storm. She felt used, manipulated and stupid because Harker hadn’t actually lied. He’d pretended to work but he was right. If he’d given her the option, she would’ve left or worked in her office.

She hated that her heart did a little flip when she thought about all he’d done to get to know her better. He said it was because of his child, their child, but was that really all? She was an open person. It shouldn’t have taken him long to know she was kind and giving. Yet, he’d spent almost a year doing whatever he could to keep her by his side.

She closed her computer and left the business part of the house. She stepped into the living room. Harker was sitting in his chair, his laptop open in front of him. He glanced up at her, his eyes wary.

She walked behind him to the couch so she could see his computer. “You’re playing video games?”

“Yeah.”

She sat on the couch. “Is this what you did all those nights I was working until my eyes crossed?”

“Sometimes.” He shrugged. “Other times I did work and some nights I just looked shit up. I take it you’re not mad anymore.”

“I’m not happy.”

“I’m not happy either but that’s not the same as not being pissed.”

“You’re lucky I’m a very logical person. If I were like Ellie—”

“We wouldn’t be here because I don’t want a woman like her.”

“Hey.” No one said anything bad about her best friend in front of her, but that didn’t stop her from wanting to jump up and do a victory dance. Ellie was gorgeous and every guy Alison had ever dated would’ve dropped her in a second for Ellie.

“You want me to want Ellie?”

“No, but you can’t say anything bad about her either.”

“I didn’t. I said she isn’t the kind of woman for me.”

“And I am?” Her heart quit beating, waiting for his answer.

“I chose you, didn’t I?”

That wasn’t exactly what she’d wanted to hear.

“Come.” He stood and held out his hand.

“Oh, no.” She knew that look. As much as she wanted to take his hand and let him lead her to paradise, it wasn’t time. “You’re not getting off that easily.’

“Are you making a jab at my performance?” His eyes sparkled. “There were only a few times that it was fast, and I always made sure you came first.”

“Not that.” She laughed. By his cocky smirk he knew damn well she wasn’t complaining about his performance.

“You said couples should forgive and forget,” he said.

“I did and I will when we’re done.”

“I thought we were done.”

“Hardly.” She sat up straighter. “You may not have tricked and manipulated me by a dictionary definition, but you came very close.”

“But I didn’t cross that line.”

“That’s debatable but forget all that.”

“Gladly.” He held out his hand. “Let’s go to bed and make up.”

“You did lie to me.”
