The next minute she’s screaming beneath me…

Yet Rachel only sees the man she thinks I am…

The bad boy from our summer fling. The one who wasn’t ready for commitment.

Okay, maybe I am still a bad boy. In the best way. The way she used to crave...

But this time I’m after more than she thinks. I’m after the chance to prove her wrong. Show her the man I am now. A father. A respected cop. The protector. The man who’ll do anything to keep her safe.

CHAPTER 1

This place is hopping. People laughing. Heavy bass beats rattle my bones. The big ballroom is quickly filling up with excited bidders, or people like me, just out to window shop.

The whole place looks like a colorful disco ball. Lights bounce off the array of sparkling dresses, shooting sparks of color in every direction. You can feel the anticipation.

Somewhere behind that curtain is the eye candy. Lots of eye candy, as in plural. A whole store full. For every flavor… Yum

Even I feel the flutter of it in my belly—which is ridiculous. The men that will be on that stage aren't really available. It’s all just a silly fundraiser.

I shake my head—if only finding your mate was as easy as picking a bachelor off a menu and placing your bid.

Maddy flutters into the seat next to me in her peacock-blue dress. My best bud and business partner shoves a big silly-looking cocktail in front of me. “Here you go, umbrella and all.”

“Good heavens, what are you trying to do to me?”

Her eyes twinkle as she grins at me, “Lube you up so you will bid on a hottie.” She pushes at the mop of blonde curls on top of her head.

Pfft. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I’m not. You’re the most eligible bachelorette here, so it makes sense.”
