CHAPTER 6

House number three is just a couple miles from the last. I look over the paper Kat hands us. Price is right. Looks like some nice updates. And it’s close to work. This one looks promising… from the outside at least.

From the backseat, Rachel grumbles, “Please, let this one be normal. I’ve got a headache from all the weirdness.”

I open her door before she beats me to it. She avoids my eyes for the umpteenth time today and follows Kat into the house.

This one has nice light. I can already see this is the best one yet.

“The walls are a lovely yellow,” comments Kat. “The kitchen is huge, and there’s enough room for a big pool in the backyard.”

Rachel has yet to say a word. I stroll by her as she spins in a big circle.

Kat scrolls through something on her phone. “Some of the furniture conveys. I’d guess that anything you see is what stays.”

I walk down the hallway to the master suite. It’s a really nice size bedroom with patio doors that lets in lots of sunlight. The bathroom has been nicely remodeled with granite and natural looking tile. And the best feature, it has a shower for two. That’s a nice plus. Not that I’ve got a woman to shower with.

I head on to the second bedroom out of three. This one has its own bath too. Definitely a plus. I flip on the light in the closet. It's big. A nice closet for an almost teenage boy with lots of sporting gear.

Rachel’s found the master bedroom. I hear her oohing. “I want it. This is it! This is going to be my house!”

I whip my head around. I hear Kat running down the hallway. “Really? We should put a contract on it right this minute if that’s really what you want.”

There’s excitement in Rachel’s voice. “Yes. I want it.”

I stick my head into the master suite. Whoa, she looks like a woman possessed. “Rachel, shouldn’t you maybe look at a few more. This is the first house you looked at.”

Her brows narrow on me. “It’s not the first house I’ve looked at.”

I shake my head. “Don’t count Van land, or Blueberry Hill, or the sex pad as real tours. This is the first real house in our price range.”

Her mouth drops open. “Are you saying that because you’re going to buy it?”

I growl, “Did I say that?”

“You didn’t have to.”

“I like the house, but I need to see more. And you should too.”

She sticks out her jaw. “I want it. This is nice.”

“But there might be something better.”

Kat interrupts, “He does have a point. But I agree, it’s nice. And if there are any major issues, it will turn up during the inspection.”

I sigh. It just seems impulsive. Rachel’s known for her unexpected and sometimes not so wise actions. I’ve seen her impulsive side plenty of times.

She crosses her arms. “Hunter, butt out.”

I shake my head. Guess it’s my turn to wait in the car.

Kat drops us at our vehicles which coincidentally happen to be parked next to each other.

I say, “Congratulations on making an offer.”

Her eyes skate over me pensively. “Thanks.” She rubs a hand over the back of her neck. Leans her head left and right. Rachel always gets a tension headache when she’s stressed.

“Headache?”
