“Will you get me something real to eat?”

I stick my nose in the Jello. “This is real.”

“Jello is not real. I mean anything that jiggles like that has to be artificial.”

I laugh and shake the green glob. “What do you have in mind?”

“Pizza and ice cream?”

“Are you supposed to eat like that?”

“Sure, why not?”

I push off the chair. “I’m going to verify that with the nurse.”

As I wander into the hall, I hear Marcus calling after me, trying to talk me out of asking.

There’s a clerk at the desk. “Excuse me, can I bring in some other food for Marcus?”

She grins. “First question every parent asks. Let me call the nurse.” She dials the phone on her desk, and they have a quick conversation. “The nurse said something from the cafeteria should be fine. And if he asked for ice cream that’s okay too.”

“You two just made my life a heck of a lot easier.”

She passes me a coupon for the cafeteria. “This will help. And don’t forget to eat something yourself.”

I glance at the clock. Damn it’s been a long day already. “Thanks, that’s wise advice. I forgot to do that in the stress of the day.”

I start to wander off toward the cafeteria when she calls my name.”

“Mr. Roman, I’ll have some blankets and extra pillows sent to his room, since I’ve heard you’re staying over.”

“You’re the best.”

CHAPTER 11

I’m really worried now. Hunter hasn’t returned my calls or my texts. The clock just hit midnight.

I dial Wendi’s number. She’s a night owl. She answers and her voice is not a sleepyhead voice. “Okay, I’m going to ask you a question that’s going to make no sense.”

“That’s got my curiosity.”

“Is everyone on the force... you know, okay? Nothing bad happened to anyone today, did it?”

“Everyone’s fine. Annoying bunch, but they’re fine.”

Relief makes me sag. “Okay. I just was worried about someone…”

She laughs. “Hunter Roman.”

“Don’t tell anyone.”

“Your secret is safe. So, what’s up?”

I chew on my lip as I consider what to say. “Well… he was supposed to meet me for the house inspection.”

“And he didn’t show?”

Irritation stings at me. “Nope.”
