“I meant what I said, Caroline. You are a talent. In all the years I’ve known Stephen, he’s never once sent me a student to stage in my kitchen and there’s a reason for that. But he sent you.

“He sent you because he knew you’d not only hold your own against me. He knew that you’d challenge me right back.

“And I need that kind of challenge in my life. There aren’t many people who would argue with me at all, especially in the kitchen.”

“I only argue,” she lifted her chin in a defensive gesture, “when I’m right.”

“You must think you’re right quite a bit.”

She smiled and leaned a fraction of an inch closer. “I know I am.”

He shook his head, his expression a mystery on his chiseled features. “There’s one thing you don’t know.”

She leaned just a little closer, enjoying the strength of his hands and arms holding her. “Try me. I bet you couldn’t surprise me again if you tried.”

“Dear Lord in Heaven you talk too much!”

“What do you-”

He kissed her.

No, he ate at her lips. Tasted her. Drank her in. His mouth was hungry, but so were his hands.

Talented with a knife, his hands moved over her with a speed that felt deliciously slow, but set her nerves burning under his touch.

She was just as hungry, but while he devoured her mouth, she could barely wrap her mind around the fact that Lucas Brierly was kissing her, in his own kitchen.

And she, Heaven help her, was powerless to do anything more than take it and wallow in the heady sensations he brought out in her and steep her latent passion for him in the heady heat of his touch.

She wanted to ask him a thousand questions. Why? Was this just a surprise? For both of them? Did he want to know that she wanted him in bed as much as she’s wanted him dead?

But questions were useless when she couldn’t seem to pull her lips away from him.

And why would she when the stroke of his tongue against hers was enough to make her wet.

A moment later his hands abandoned her arms and slid down to wrap around her hips. He grabbed a hold of her backside, his strong fingers biting into the delicate crease where her thigh ended and her ass began.

And oh, were his hands strong. He lifted her up to the prep table and set her down a heartbeat before he dug his fingertips into her flesh and pulled her flush against his front.

Thousands of people called Lucas a culinary god, but now Caroline knew that there was another part of him that begged to be worshipped.

She squirmed, and pushed closer, curling her hips forward to grind against him.

His lips left hers to find the frantic beat of her pulse just under her ear.

“Lucas, wait.”

He froze against her, lifting his lips away from her flesh. Turning his head to see her expression.

And that’s when they both heard it. The phone against the wall in the main area of the kitchen was ringing.

She looked at him. “Do you have to answer that?”

He narrowed a look at her even as he straightened his legs, so he towered over her.

“I should.”

She nodded. Everyone knew that service was over for the night, if someone was calling the inside line…
