It wasn’t even until the baby had been born that he had any idea if it was his or not.

And it only took one look at Nadia to know that she was his. She had his eyes.

Only Brierlys had eyes like theirs.

From that moment, he did whatever it took to take care of Nadia and that included taking care of Sandrine as well.

But once she’d given birth, Sandrine had gone back to her same behaviors and that was taking care of herself.

Sure, she must have loved Nadia in some way. In some form.

But her love was mostly focused on making Nadia into a little copy of herself.

Nadia didn’t want to dance like her mother.

She didn’t want to wear tiny couture dresses like her mother.

She certainly didn’t have a demeanor like her mother.

That was why things had come to a head the night that Caroline had finished working for him at Bulldog. Sandrine had enough with the mundane details of caring for a child and when Caroline left him, he’d seen the look on her face when he’d embraced Nadia.

She’d looked scared.

Haunted almost.

He knew right then that Caroline wasn’t coming back.

She wasn’t someone who wanted a child in her life.

No, he hadn’t asked her about it, but then again, he’d quite literally had his arms full.

The pull he felt toward Caroline was just that, a pull.

It was elemental.

Gravitational.

God, he still wanted her.

Wanted her like oxygen.

But there was no way that he would open that door into his heart.

He owed all of his time and love to Nadia. She was the only one who he owed anything to.

“Damn it.”

And that meant if she wanted to get to know Caroline Franzen, he’d do whatever he could to make it happen.

A relationship between Caroline and himself?

Bloodly unlikely!

Late that night, after Nadia was fast asleep, he looked up Caroline’s address in town.

Or rather, out of town.
