“Lucas?”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

There were so many answers to that question, he just couldn’t pull his thoughts together.

He growled under his breath. She sounded like she’d been recently bedded and damn it, he was jealous.

“Are you alone?”

She sighed, sounding more defeated than anything else. “What are you talking about?”

He leaned in, bringing his face less than a few inches from hers. “Forget it. Just forget I even stopped by. Okay?”

He turned and walked away, his legs stiff, his spine ramrod straight.

“Lucas?”

He was back to his car before he turned around to look back at her.

She was standing on the walkway just outside her door.

Her feet were bare and her hair blew around her shoulders.

She looked like some kind of siren of the night.

A witch or fae-folk come to steal his heart.

He just didn’t know if he had a heart left to steal.

He loved his daughter.

Beyond that, he just didn’t know.

And he didn’t trust himself to find out.

“Go back inside, Caroline. Go back to bed.”

Hopefully alone.

She took another step toward him, but he held up a hand to ward her off and got back into his car to go home.

He’d made a complete and utter mess of his daughter’s simple request.

He blamed himself completely.

Being close enough to smell Caroline Franzen had driven him over the edge.

When he pulled into his driveway, he sat there, with his hands on the wheel.

He didn’t trust himself to take his hands away from it.

He couldn’t even get out of the car yet.

He was hard.

Hard enough to make even his well-worn jeans damned uncomfortable.
