Page 36 of Not Over You

“Wanna hang out together and play some video games or something? I’m bored as hell.” I need the distraction and beating Grady is always fun.

He groans playfully into his phone. “You know I do.”

“Cool. See you in a bit.”

I disconnect the call and immediately begin to pace again. I kind of want a beer, but a glance at the clock tells me that eight in the morning is a little too early to start drinking. So, I settle for a coke, chugging it as hard and fast as I can.

The more anxious I feel, the angrier I get with myself. I’m acting like an idiot. Just because we slept together doesn’t mean she wants me. She proved that to me a long time ago, why should now be any different?

“Dude, what are you doing?” Grady says from behind me.

I jump and let out a very non-manly squawk. I spin around to find Grady staring at me. “I didn’t hear you come in,” I say.

“Well, considering you were staring at that cabinet like you were mind-melding with it, I can see why not.”

I lift my shoulders and scoot the box of donuts in his direction. “I was debating on eating another donut. I got a dozen, and they gave me these heart ones on sale.”

There was no reason for me to cover for getting the heart donuts. Sometimes the less information you give, the better. Luckily, Grady doesn’t question it as he grabs a bear claw in one hand and a heart in the other.

“Sweet,” he says and walks over to the couch. “Dude, this time, don’t be cocky.” Grady taunts as I fire up the Xbox. “You get cocky, and we die, every time.”

“I can’t help being cocky, man. It’s a big part of me.” I point to my crotch and grin.

“I’ve got you beat in every way. Size, girth, appearance, and stamina,” he replies.

“With one hand or you switch off?” I grin and get a pillow thrown at my head.

“Keep talking, but we both know you wouldn’t want me to whip out the measuring stick,” he says as he jumps over my player and renders me motionless for a few seconds.

“Hey! Don’t jump my bones,” I yell, “I’m not about that!”

“Stop playing with your hand down your pants then. As usual, I’m pulling all the weight while you walk around with your dick in your hand.”

“My joystick is critical to this mission,” I say, running full speed ahead when my man unfreezes.

“Your joystick is,” Grady starts, “and now we’re dead.”

“Next time, don’t mess with my stick,” I exclaim as the game reboots. It’s nice to just forget about all the crap running through my mind and hang with Grady for a while.

We run through two different tactical games and then start playing football before I hear the door open. Reality slams back into me, and I am reminded why Grady is here to begin with. He’d served his purpose well, acting as a distraction.

Nina walks in alone, and I concentrate really hard on creating my quarterback’s custom jersey. At least I am pretending to concentrate really hard. I’m just thrilled that she didn’t bring the one-armed wonder back with her.

“Hey, Sis,” Grady says, “where have you been? You want in on this action?”

“No thanks, I’ll watch you guys play,” she says quietly.

“Where were you?” Grady asks again.

“I was out with this guy from work, Sam,” she responds. This could not be any more awkward, but I don’t dare turn around.

“Do you like this guy?” Grady asks.

My interest is piqued, and my ears perk up. Yes, I am curious to hear her answer.

She sits on the edge of the couch and keeps her gaze lowered. “Um, I did. I don’t really want to talk about this right now.”

Grady snorts. “What in front of Travis? He doesn’t care. He’s busy making his quarterback look as absolutely ridiculous as he can.”
