They stayed like that until he softened and slipped out, and as he removed the condom and dropped it into the trashcan in the adjoining bathroom, Lori sank into the pillow, her heart pounding faster than it’d ever been forced to. A thought stole through her mind that she should ask her cardiologist whether such vigorous sex was a good or bad thing. Good, surely? Wasn’t that why people worked out so strenuously in expensive gyms or by pounding through Central Park?

Zane flopped beside her and reached for her hand, bringing it to his chest. She rolled onto her side, burrowing her nose into his neck. He smelled of sweat and man and sex, and a hundred other delicious scents that made him so unique.

“Are you okay?”

“I think so.” She laughed. “Strike that. I know so. Christ, my pussy is throbbing, but I feel alive.”

He turned, too, bringing them face to face, nose to nose. “My dick missed you so much, but I missed you more.”

“I’m honored.”

“You should be. My dick is very choosy.” He lifted her on top of him and rolled his hips. He was already sporting a semi. “And he chooses you.”

She raised herself on her elbows, staring into his eyes. More dark chocolate than milk in the muted light and the afterglow of sex.

“Just as well.” She lowered her lips to his. “Because I’m not letting either of you go.”

CHAPTER 16

“It’s been three weeks since you told me about Lori coming back into your life, and you’re still hiding her from me.” Calum stretched his arms overhead and yawned. “As your best friend, this is unacceptable.”

Zane laughed. “I’m not hiding her from you.”

Calum narrowed his eyes. “Well, you still haven’t introduced us, so what other conclusion should I draw?”

“It’s not intentional. I’m just…” A vision of Lori in lingerie she’d surprised him with last night sprang to mind, and his dick stirred in response.

“Madly in love. Yeah, I get it. Which is why it’s even more important that I give her the Brook seal of approval.”

“That’s what I’m worried about.” Zane sipped his coffee. “Your tongue can slice through granite when the mood takes you, and I’m not having you sharpening it on Lori.”

“I am undeserving of that comment.” When Zane raised an eyebrow, Calum huffed. “Okay, I might resemble that comment, but Laurella has tamed me. I’m a reformed character. I occasionally think before I speak these days.”

“It’s the occasions where you don’t that concern me.”

“Oh, come on, Zane. If, like you say, Lori is it for you, then you’re either going to cut me out of your life which, FYI, isn’t happening, or you’re going to have to bite the bullet and introduce us.”

He had a point, and Zane hadn’t been keeping them apart on purpose. Well, not entirely on purpose. In between insane workloads driven by Dayton, whose demands soared to new heights each week, they’d spent their limited free time wrapped up in each other. He didn’t want to share what few hours they had together having her suffer the third degree under Calum’s sharp gaze, even with Laurella reining him in when required. But the sooner he gave in the better. Calum wouldn’t quit until he’d gotten his way.

“Fine. Are you free tomorrow night?”

“For this, I can be.”

“I’ll book the restaurant, and you,” he jabbed a finger at his best friend, “had better be on your best behavior.”

Calum brought his hands up to the side of his head. “I promise. She’s gonna love me.”

“Jury’s out on that.”

Calum chuckled. “You watch. In five minutes, I’ll have her eating out of my hand.”

“I think she’d rather eat off a plate.” Zane dismissed him with a flick of his wrist. “Now get the fuck out of my office. I’ve got a ton of work to do, and so do you.”

“I cleared the last barrage of requests from Dayton.”

“Yeah, well, I just forwarded several more.”

“Fucking marvelous.” Calum rose to his feet and fastened his jacket. “That guy is relentless.”
