The house is almost the size of my entire apartment block and the land stretches all around it, transforming into lush forest on every side.

“What is this place again?” I ask.

It seemed straight-froward when Alex first told me about the owners of this house and how they were considering selling it when Shane convinced them to let us stay here for a few days.

Now, watching as the intimidating building gets closer, then towers over us as we park out front, something feels out of place.

Alex had said that we don’t get to spend enough time together and I have to agree with him. With Annie and my mother at home, I haven’t had any privacy at all, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

Shane’s chuckle from the front seat catches my attention as Alex turns to answer my question.

“Just a place to enjoy each other for a while.” Alex winks and I drop my gaze with a sheepish smile.

We passed the city limits five minutes ago, so the house is close to amenities while maintaining enough of a distance to be secluded away from neighbors.

Shane turns off the engine and they exchange a sly glance with each other in the front seat, unaware I’m watching them and I sense they are up to something.

I open my backseat door and step into the fresh air.

It smells better out here.

The sound of the wind rustling through the trees isn’t drowned out by cars and a cacophony of voices.

“I could get used to living out here.” I crane my neck and look all of the way up to the roof of the home looming over us.

When I look back, both men have huge grins on their faces and neither of them have said a word.

I glare my silent accusations at them.

They’re up to something. I’m sure of it.

I step to the trunk to wait for them to join me and open it so I can grab the bag they told me to pack.

“We’ll come back for our stuff. We want to show you around.” Shane reaches his hand, motioning to the front door. The sound of keys jingling in Alex’s hands catches my attention.

“That’s a lot of keys.”

“There are a lot of doors.” Alex winks as he zeroes in on one larger key.

I follow them through the threshold and freeze in place at the sight.

The inside of the house has potential but it lacks the warm ambiance of having people living in it.

“You guys. This place is huge.” I spin around in the front entryway, taking in all of the possibilities. I could go left, right or straight down the hallway, and I wonder what I’ll find at the top of the stairs. “I don’t think we’ll see every inch of it before we have to give the keys back.”

I walk past both men and toward the back of the house.

Who am I kidding?

In my world, this is called a mansion.

The kitchen at the back of the house is bright and the full length windows overlook a yard with a sprawling garden and patio.

The appliances alone make my little chef’s heart flutter and I step up toward the patio doors.

“Who says we have to give the keys back?” Alex joins me and I spin, to look at his features.

“Are you thinking of buying this place?”
