Tigran had already cleaned up the bodies, but Michele said he wanted to clean up the rest.

Gallo looked me in the eye again before he pulled over. He went to put his hand on the door, about to run, but I was too fast. I put the gun behind his ear and pulled the trigger.

I was out.

PRESENT DAY

I was waiting by the ER entrance ever since I watched my husband leave. Tigran’s two guards watched me, their eyes playing ping-pong with my back-and-forth body. My head felt light, and I needed something to eat, but I couldn’t stop moving, and a solid mass of nerves blocked my throat.

I turned around for a second, taking a deep breath. How would I even know…? I turned around again, and the doors automatically opened as a bright rush of sunlight hit me in the eyes. I blinked a couple of times, trying to get the searing imprints to clear.

When they somewhat did, I blinked again. Blinked some more.

He grinned at me, holding out his hand. “Come on, baby. You’re coming with me.”

He was even more gorgeous than the day I’d met him. Even more charming. All the blood rushed to my feet.

“Where are we going?” I barely got out.

“To Michele’s for a dinner fit for a king and his queen. And then wherever we fucking want to. The world is our own Coney Island.”

He caught me before I fell into his arms, and then he carried me out, both of us swallowed by the light.

WHAT WE LEFT BEHIND

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about falling in love with my very own Prince Charming. He’d whisk me away to his castle by the sea, and we’d live happily ever after just like in the fairy tales my mom read to me.

When I’d met Lincoln, I knew he was my Prince Charming. With his light brown hair and stormy blue eyes, he turned my teenage heart to mush with just one smile. And I’d been in love with him ever since.

We planned to go to college together, then get married and have two kids, a boy and a girl. We had our life planned out, and everything was perfect. Until it wasn’t.

Life didn’t always go as planned. Dreams didn’t come true, and fairy tales didn’t exist. We promised each other forever, but those promises shattered like glass, and even though we tried, there was no way to put the broken pieces back together.

And we never recovered from that.

I stared at the pregnancy test in my trembling hands, rapidly blinking my eyes at the two pink lines.

This can’t be happening.

My vision was clouded as I looked up at Lincoln. I felt tears spill from my eyes and trickle down my cheeks. My voice cracked as I asked, “What are we going to do, Lincoln?”

Lincoln forced a smile and rubbed my back reassuringly. “We’ll figure out something.”
