My mom’s frown softened, and her tense stature relaxed. She glanced over at my father who reached over and put his hand over hers. They seemed to speak without words as they smiled at each other.

After a few moments, my mom looked back at me. “Okay. But I’m not doing it for you or for her. I’m doing this for my grandbaby.”

I grinned. “I’ll take it.”

After talking to my parents about the upcoming weekend, I went upstairs to shower and get ready for bed. Images of Piper giggling while riding Buttercup with Liv flashed through my head, and I couldn’t help but smile. Time couldn’t go by fast enough until Saturday.

I was finishing up some reports at work when my phone buzzed. I ignored it, already behind due to my lack of focus and suddenly hectic life outside of work. Namely Lincoln.

The initial assignment was only supposed to last eight weeks, but from our results and progress, I would possibly need to stay longer. My company’s priority was the science, so if I had to stay longer, it wouldn’t be an issue. That was one of the main reasons I chose to work for my company instead of others that paid more; they put the science first no matter the cost. Some companies prioritized cost and revenue over the actual science and discovery but not mine.

I’d always been fascinated with science. There were so many amazing things in life that only the magic of the subject could explain. Astronomers used telescopes to peer back in time and study the secrets held in the stars. Biologists discovered new species while figuring out how to save others from extinction.

Science wasn’t the answer to all of our problems, but it usually showed the path to the solutions. And the more we knew, the more questions we uncovered; a never-ending search for answers that would continue for as long as the human race existed. And I loved the constant quest for knowledge.

My phone buzzed again, drawing my attention from my work. I glanced up with irritation at the flashing light that notified me I had messages waiting.

I set my pencil down and swiped my phone from the desk. A smile curved my lips when I saw it was from Lincoln.

Linc:Dinner with my parents tomorrow?

I internally groaned, my smile falling. Lincoln’s parents, his mom especially, were very protective of their son. They disagreed with the adoption and hated me for leaving Lincoln like I did, which I couldn’t blame them for. I would’ve felt the same way had the roles been reversed.

I gnawed on my bottom lip as I typed my reply.

Me:As long as you take me out for drinks after

Lincoln didn’t take long to respond, and I laughed at his message.

Linc:Done. Can I take you out tonight, too?

Lincoln and I had seen each other every night since we’d had sex, and to say there was sexual tension between us was an understatement. Lincoln probably had the bluest balls in the history of dating given how hot and heavy we would get before I stopped and said good night.

I felt a little silly for making Lincoln wait since we’d already had sex, but I didn’t want to become too caught up in passion and complicate things any more than they already were.

However, I was reaching my breaking point. Lincoln had me all wound up, and I needed relief.

Tonight may be the night.

It was Thursday, and I planned on staying at the office a little late so it would be nice to unwind afterward.

Me:Sure. Pick me up @ 6
