“Thanks, but I can’t ask you to do that.”

He places his wrench down and changes the subject. “How was the trip?”

“Good. But I didn’t tell her.”

“Wasn’t that the whole reason for you taking her there?”

“Yeah, it was. But when I started to tell her, she cut me off. She doesn’t want to know the reason I broke things off. She’s hell bent on keeping things casual between us, meaning we’re both allowed to see other people.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“Hell no. Just the thought of her with someone else…”

I can’t even finish my statement without throwing something. Breaking something. Adrian chuckles. “Jaxon, is it really fair to expect her not be with someone else?”

I blow out a deep breath. “I know. But you know the situation.”

“Yeah, I know. But Kai doesn’t. And if you keep this from her, you’re taking away her choice. Tell her. And let her decide if she wants to continue to see you. In whatever capacity.”

“She called me. I couldn’t answer.”

He packs up his things. “Tell her.”

I nod.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

He leaves the garage, and I pull my phone out of my pocket. I send a text to Kai asking if we can talk. I head inside as I wait for her to reply. The stress of the day engulfs me. I grab a beer out of the refrigerator and check my phone. Still no Kai. It wasn’t my intention to not call her. But the past two days have been hectic, to say the least. Still, I don’t want her to think that I’m blowing her off. I send her another text, this time just a question mark. I see that she’s seen both texts, but she leaves me on read. This isn’t good. I told her I would prove myself to her, that I would earn her trust back, but then I disappear for two days with no warning or reason. I lie across the bed and think about last weekend. I have flashbacks of my hands gliding across her smooth skin. I can still remember the way she held me as I took her inch by inch. I look at my phone again. No reply. I decide to call her. I pull her contact up and hit the call button. She sends me to voicemail.

KAI

I was reluctant to go to the office today. It’s not my style to call in sick more than once, but the situation with Jaxon has me feeling gloomy. I never should have allowed him back into my life. I know I said that I want to keep things casual, but him ghosting me for two days pisses me off. Especially after the weekend we had. I would expect it from the guys I’m just sleeping with. We don’t have history together. I never loved any of them. And it wasn’t them who begged me to give them another chance. I don’t know what Jaxon’s deal is. I don’t know what it is he’s hiding or what he’s occupied with. But at this point, I don’t care. I’m done. I gave him another shot, and he blew it. Kenzie bursts through my office door. “There’s chatter going around.”

“About what?”

“S. Roberts is here.”

“S. Roberts as in the founder?”

“Yeah. Word is they’re downsizing.”

I start to reply, but there’s a knock at my door. My assistant walks in. “Kai. You’re needed in the conference room.”

Kenzie looks at me wide-eyed. “This isn’t good.”

I smile. “It’ll be okay. If anything happens, can you pack up my things?”

She nods before allowing me to pass by her. My heart races as I approach the conference room. The doors are glass, so I already see Paul and two other people waiting for me. When I enter, the room grows quiet. Paul stands. “Kai, please take a seat.”

I take the seat closest to the door and wait for him to start. Only, it isn’t him who speaks. It’s Mr. Roberts. “Kai. As you’re aware, the company has experienced a loss.”

I nod.

“After careful consideration, we’ve decided to downsize the company. Unfortunately, your position is no longer needed.”

I take a deep breath. “When is my last day?”
