He shrugs. “It has its days.”

He leans against the counter, and I pour myself another glass of wine. “It’s hard to believe you’re single. You seem like you’re the total package.”

“I could say the same about you.”

I take a sip of my wine as my eyes trail his body unintentionally. Caleb is walking lust. I can see his rock-hard chest outlined through his shirt. His toned arms are enough to make you want to grip them. Under normal circumstances, we’d be in my bedroom by now. I’d let him have his way with me, and I would have my way with him. But these aren’t normal circumstances. Jaxon ruined any chance of me sleeping with anyone else again the minute his lips touched mine. Damn him.

He smiles at me. “Let me take you to dinner.”

It’s a nice gesture. But I can’t even entertain the idea right now. “I’m sorry, but…I can’t.”

“Is there someone else?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

He walks around the counter and places a hand on my shoulders. “He’s a lucky guy. If you ever change your mind, you know how to reach me.”

I nod. “Thank you. I’ll walk you out.”

I move to place my wine glass on the counter, and at the same time, Caleb’s hands slide away from my shoulder. I fumble the glass and spill red wine all over his light gray shirt and my yellow one. “Shit, I’m so sorry.” I place the glass down and grab a paper towel in an attempt to rub the stain but only making it worse.

He places his hands around mine and stops me. “It’s okay.”

“At least, let me wash it. It’s the least I can do.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude.”

“I’m sure. You’re not intruding. We can sit on the balcony and talk until it’s finished.”

“Okay.”

He pulls his shirt over his head, and it’s as I suspected. Muscles. Abs. And a sexy-as-fuck tattoo on his chest. But even with all of this, it doesn’t matter. Caleb does nothing for me. I avert my eyes and carry his shirt to the washer. “Are you allergic to any detergent?” I yell.

“No!” he yells back.

I’m in the middle of rolling on stain remover before placing it in the washer when my doorbell rings. It’s probably Kenzie coming back. “Caleb, could you get the door for me, please? It’s probably Kenzie.”

“Sure, I got it.”

I add the detergent, start the washer, then unbutton my shirt. I throw them both in the washer and rush to grab a black tank top from my bedroom. It gets hot out on my balcony, and the wine I’ve consumed will make it worse. The last thing I need is to sweat. I check the kitchen, expecting to see Caleb and Kenzie, but it’s empty. I head to my foyer and let out a tiny gasp when I arrive there. Caleb is standing with the door open, and Jaxon is on the other side. He’s seething with anger. And when his eyes land on mine, they’re as sharp as daggers. I rush over to do damage control. “Jaxon, what are you doing here?”

He looks between Caleb and me. His expression is murderous. “Kai, care to tell me why my brother is shirtless and answering your fucking door?”

CHAPTER 6

JAXON

Kai’s mouth drops open as she looks between Caleb and me. “Brother?”

Caleb turns to Kai. “You two know each other?”

I don’t wait for her to answer. I invite myself in, brushing past Caleb. By the time I reach Kai, I’m about to explode. “What the hell is going on?”

She folds her arms across her chest. “You don’t get to disappear for two days, then show up at my place unannounced as if nothing happened.”

“I texted you. I called you. You didn’t respond, so I came over.”

“And as you can see, I’m busy. You can’t expect for me to drop what I’m doing when it’s convenient for you, Jaxon.”
