“Yeah. Listen, I’m sorry for being a jerk. I shouldn’t have told you about Summer before he had a chance to.”

Jaxon walks in on that moment and hands Caleb his shirt. “Yeah, that was a dick move.”

Caleb cracks a smile. “I’m not here to cause any trouble.”

Jaxon takes his place by my side and pulls me closely to him. “You drop by my woman’s home unannounced, but you don’t want to cause any trouble?” Caleb doesn’t answer him. After a few minutes, Jaxon speaks again. “We need to talk.”

Caleb nods. “Yeah, we do. You, me, Mom, and Dad.”

“Okay, then. Number still the same?”

“Yeah.”

“Then I’ll call you.”

Calen turns to me. “Thanks for washing the shirt.”

He turns to leave when Jaxon calls out after him. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but she’s mine.”

“Jaxon…”

I’m interrupted by Caleb. “I was interested. But her mind was elsewhere.”

He walks away, and when I hear the door close, I turn to Jaxon. “Was that necessary?”

“Yes. Very.”

“Listen, nothing happened between Caleb and me. He’s a friend of Kenzie’s boyfriend, and she invited him over that day.”

“To hook you two up.”

“Yeah, that was the plan. But I was too worried about you to give him the time of day.”

We’re interrupted by his cell phone. He looks at the caller and answers it quickly. His eyes go wide, and he turns to face me. “Yes. Okay.” His answers are short, so I’m not sure what the call is about. “I’ll be there shortly.” He ends the call and just stares at his phone for a second.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“It’s Summer. She’s awake.”

My heart stops beating for a second. What will this mean for him? For us? I wasn’t exactly sure where Jaxon and I would go from here. I wasn’t sure if I was willing to go through this with him. To share him with another woman. But now that she’s awake, the feeling of losing him cripples me all over again. “You should go. You need to be there.”

The pain engulfs me, and I’m on the brink of tears at the thought of sending him off to another woman. He takes a step toward me, closing the gap between us. “Come with me.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“It is a good idea. I need you to see that there is nothing between Summer and me.”

I place my hand against his cheek. “I appreciate you wanting me to be there, but that’s just not right. She just woke up. Give her time to adjust to everything before you show up with another woman.”

He thinks about my statement. “I don’t deserve you, Kai. How can you be so willing to let me go on my own, after everything I’ve told you?”

“It’s not easy for me. But this situation isn’t something I should be involved with. At least, not right now, anyway. It’s best that you sort things out with Summer. Then we can figure out where we go from there.”

He nods. “Okay. Do you mind if I take a shower?”

“Sure. Go ahead.”

He kisses my forehead before rushing off to the bathroom. As soon as he’s out of sight, I plop down on the couch and allow the tears to fall.
