“Ha ha, you dirty little joker. If you do go to the orgy, make sure you bring condoms and don’t let anyone pour your drink for you.”

“I know, I know.” This is his mantra every time I go out to a party or anywhere with a boy.

“Okay, I have to go eat some jello cake and do a shot of tequila.”

I chuckle. “Sounds like a plan, pops. I’ll talk to you soon, love you.”

“Love you too, butter bean.”

I stand and stretch my arms above me and do a little wiggle. Then I contemplate going over to Owen’s house. He did invite me. I grab my glass and head inside to my room. When I get there, I glance at myself in the mirror and decide to at least change so if I feel like going over, I’ll be cute instead of whatever this is.

I choose a pink maxi dress with spaghetti straps and little white seahorses, brush my hair and swipe on some lip gloss. Since I’ve been in the sun every day for almost three weeks, I’m already rocking a tan so I feel like makeup is unnecessary.

The kitchen makes me sad because the table is still set and I haven’t cleaned up my mess yet. Putting away the dishes and cleaning makes me feel a little better but I still don’t feel like a party. I fill my wine glass up again, grab my book and flashlight and head back up to the deck.

I’m reading one of the old paperbacks from my mom’s bookshelf and it’s a historical romance with Fabio on the cover. It’s pretty cheesy but the part I’m reading is very touching and a little sad. I start crying and when I put the book down, I cry harder letting go of my frustrations and anger from the day.

I hear a creak and jump, turning to see Owen climbing the stairs to the deck.

“Hey,” he says brightly, “I thought I might find you up here.”

I nod, not able to talk just yet. He can’t see me to tell that I’m crying so I try to hide my face.

“Hey.”

“Whatcha doing up here all alone? Where’s your mom?”

“Too much traffic, she didn’t make it. I watched the fireworks up here.”

“Did you eat dinner?”

I nod as he comes to sit in the chair next to mine.

“You look all dressed up, you coming over?” he asks.

I shrug. “I was thinking about it.”

He leans towards me then moves to sit on my lounger. “Why so sad?”

I wipe a stray tear and shrug again. “Today was a lot.”

He throws his arm around me and it feels so good, so I lean my head on his chest. I take a deep breath and shit, he smells really nice. His hand goes to my hair and he threads his fingers through then plays with the ends. It’s soothing and confusing but it feels amazing so I just lean into it.

“You look really nice, I think you should come over and have a drink.”

“Not sure I’m in the mood for a party,” I answer.

“There’s about ten of us, so hardly a rager but Snyder brought red white and blue jello shots that I don’t want you to miss out on. Plus, Dirk brought one of those cakes with whipped cream, blueberries and strawberries in the shape of the flag.”

“You make a compelling argument,” I say and smile up at him.

His hand comes around to cup my face and he tilts me to him and kisses me lightly on the lips. My eyes go wide and he smiles shyly,

“Is that something that would convince you or scare you away?”

I shrug. “I might need a repeat to be able to decide,” I say apparently getting some courage from the three glasses of wine I’ve had.

My stomach explodes with butterflies as he pulls me to him and kisses me like he means it. His lips are firm but I still feel cherished. When his tongue ventures to my mouth, I open for him and the kiss deepens and it is amazing. I’ve never had a kiss this good, he holds my face, gently moving his lips over mine, teasing then demanding, back to teasing and then just drawing me in.
