I laugh at the exchange and so does Mollie.

“Mollie has been trying to resist me for the past month, but finally after swallowing half the ocean and having a near-death experience she’s realized she can’t live without me,” I say.

Her hand playfully pats my chest. “Only after throwing up a gallon of water did I realize I better kiss someone before I die. He was the closest,” she says with a shrug.

“What about in the kitchen thirty minutes ago?” I ask resting my head on her shoulder, grazing her earlobe with my mouth.

She taps her lips like she’s trying to remember it. “That was temporary insanity brought on by loneliness.”

My heart sinks because I’m not sure if she’s teasing me or if she’s having some regrets. I’ll take her squeezing my hand she’s holding as a sign that she’s teasing me.

“I love it, you guys make a cute couple,” Katie says. “Now we can go on double dates.”

“That sounds fun,” Mollie says rocking back and forth on my lap and now I’m regretting my decision to place her here because she’s going to feel the result of all of that rocking pretty soon.

“Hey, I’m not complaining but unless you want me to get really embarrassed, let up on the sudden movements here,” I whisper in her ear.

She twists her mouth and furrows her brow, then wiggles ever so slightly and my dick is done for. When she feels it, her mouth pops open and she looks at me wide-eyed.

I fold my lips into my mouth and nod, hoping she doesn’t freak out too much. Instead, she does something I’d never in a million years expect.

She rotates her hips and I just about come in my pants. I hear her laugh at something Dirk says but my ears are clogged as the blood rushes from my brain to my crotch like it’s an express train. The three of them continue to laugh and talk while I try to collect myself.

“Looks like Owen had a beer too many,” Dirk says. “Or did you have one of the firecracker brownies?”

“You got me, these are going down like water,” I say shaking the can of Miller Lite in my hand. I’m not a big drinker but I don’t mind beer as long as it’s cold. “No brownies for me.”

“Stay away from the jello shaped like stars, they are deadly,” Katie comments then takes a swig of her wine cooler.

“I know, I made them,” I laugh.

Mollie jumps up from my lap as I place my beer over the bulge in my shorts. “I’m going to get another beer and one of those jello things, anyone want one?”

Afraid to stand, I nod and point to my beer. As much as I want to follow her, there’s no way I could hide the clear sign of my affection. She smiles at me and salutes as she walks inside the house.

“Dude, you are suffering,” Dirk teases me.

“I wouldn’t be if you all would take a hint and leave.” He and Katie laugh and then actually get up to leave.

At this point, there are just a few other stragglers left and I’m hoping they get the message when Dirk leaves. He is the social director of the group and people tend to follow his lead. I’m hoping that I can get a little bit of alone time with Mollie before the night is over.

She returns with my beer but nothing else. “I’m going to walk out with Dirk and Katie. I’m really tired from today and I think just the three beers have done me in.”

I finally am able to stand as the disappointment deflates me everywhere. “It was a pretty eventful day.”

She steps into my space and I bring her in for a hug. “Can we talk tomorrow?” she asks.

“You know where I’ll be,” I say and she laughs and playfully punches me in the stomach.

“Don’t stay up too late, it’s supposed to be a nice day tomorrow.”

“I won’t, but Dirk says no one gets to the beach early tomorrow except for the moms and littles.”

“All the more reason to be not so hungover tomorrow,” she scolds and I can’t resist her when she is being so cute.

My hand goes to her jaw and I pull her face up to mine and kiss her long and sweet. “See you in the morning, Hatchet.”

She shakes her head, eyes a little glassy from the kiss and the beer, and walks out. My aunt always tells me the best way to get people to leave a party is to start cleaning up, so I start collecting bottles, cans and cups. Dirk was right, I have had too many beers so it’s for the best.
