MOLLIE NOW

Me: I fooled around with my neighbor.

Nat: WHAT?

As I lay in my bed, I think about the intense physical connection I feel with Owen. It’s always been there, but now there is all the baggage that came in between then and now. I guess I took too long to respond to Natalie because my phone rings.

“Hi,” I say.

“Um, Hi? Is that all you have to say, you saucy bitch?” Nat asks and I laugh because she is as dramatic as Owen is.

“No, I have to tell you all about how Owen and I finally had a heart to heart, realized my mom sabotaged us when we were teenagers so she’s the one who ghosted us. Also, we are still hot for each other and he had his hands in my bathing suit bottoms.”

“Whew, you lucky whore. I’m going to need a lot more than that summary but high five.” I hear her smack her own hand like a goof and laugh.

“It felt like no time had passed, Nat. Every touch, kiss, and nibble made me come alive.”

“How many times did you come alive?” she asks.

“Twice, but we didn’t even have sex yet and I can tell it’s going to be epic.”

“What does this mean?”

“I don’t know and I don’t think we are ready to really examine what’s happening to us yet. It sounds silly because we were so young, but I truly believed he was end game for me. I’ve never connected with anyone like I did with him. When we didn’t see each other again, it was like losing a piece of myself.”

“So, a few fingers in your panties doesn’t make up for the heartbreak you’ve felt since you were 18?”

“Pretty much,” I say, and what else is there to say?

“Clearly, you need more fingers and maybe the D to make a well researched decision.”

“Obviously,” I say with a laugh.

My phone beeps and I see it’s Steven calling.

“As much as I don’t want to get off the phone with you, Steven is calling and I think it’s about the closing,” I say.

“Gotcha, tell that dick lick to sit on a pine cone,” she says and hangs up and I click to answer his call.

“Hi, Steven.”

“Hello, Mollie. I’m calling to tell you the closing is next Tuesday at 10 am.”

“Perfect. I’ll be there,” I say.

“Great,” he says and hangs up.

Ugh, I guess I’m selling my house next week. I stare at the ceiling feeling sad but also hopeful. The closing will be the last loose end in my marriage and a commitment to a new life. Will I choose to live down here full time? I can’t be sure, but Nat is right, I need more time and interaction with Owen to see if what we have is actually something real or if it’s just a stroll down memory lane.

I take that hopeful feeling and use it to get out of bed and get to work. After showering, coffee, and a bagel I crack open my laptop and start an outline for a time travel book idea I’ve been thinking about.

Serai is a ten-year-old girl who is obsessed with dragons. Her scientist father dies and leaves her his time machine in his will. She uses it to travel back and forth in time until she finally finds dinosaurs and brings back babies with her to the future.

I start building the world, adding characters and issues that Serai faces with time travel and caring for baby velociraptors. When Owen knocks on my sliding door I startle, realizing it’s dark outside.

I wave him in. “Hey, I brought some lobster bisque and garlic bread, Hungry?” he asks holding a big shopping bag. My stomach rumbles as I realize I’ve been working for hours and haven’t eaten since my late breakfast.

“Yes, very hungry, I have salad stuff too.”
