“Me and that hot dad of yours,” she says with a leer.

“No, Nat, bad girl,” I scold her and smack her hand.

She cackles and shrugs. “Nat doesn’t lie! Your dad is a DILF and we all know it.”

“Okay, I think we’ve had enough champagne here.”

“Probably,” she says with a light slur, “I can’t hold my alcohol since I had a kid. It’s embarrassing.”

We call a car and are silent the whole ride back to my house where we are having a sleepover. When we are getting close to home, I turn to her.

“I’m going down the shore tomorrow,” I say just deciding this minute.

She sits up. “What?”

“I just can’t be in this house anymore,” I gesture as we pull up. “I’m too sad to stay with you or dad. I’d bring the bad juju.”

“I love your juju,” she says as we walk to the front door. “I understand though.”

The two of us enjoy an entire gallon of ice cream together and watch Cast Away and Wall*E since they are both cinematic masterpieces and are the same movie sorta.

“Are you going to be lonely down on that island like Tom Hanks?” Nat asks and I laugh because she’s not wrong that it gets pretty deserted in the off season.

“Nah, it’ll be me and all the seagulls and elderly couples. Maybe my neighbor, Lucy, will be there. Sometimes she stays in the fall.”

“Wait, is that the hot neighbor’s aunt? Like, the one who dumped your ass when you were 18?”

“Yes, that’s her, but she’s awesome, even if her nephew is a butt munch.” I can admit I’ve had a moment to think about whether Owen would be there, but why would he? Even if Lucy is there, there’s no reason for him to be visiting her.

“Maybe you can find some island sausage to hop on to while you’re finding yourself,” Nat says and I shake my head at her being ridiculous.

“I can’t imagine the pool of single men to be very deep.”

“You just need one dick, jeez, don’t be greedy.”

“I’m sure the house will be empty and I’ll be delightfully alone to wallow and use my pain to write a masterpiece.”

“That’s the spirit,” she says rolling her eyes. “There’s always construction going on down there in the off season, find yourself some hot carpenter that wants to nail ya.”

“I like your fantasy world but I’m okay with no sex for a while. I need to work on myself.”

“Fine, at least take a few vibrators and a dildo.”

The next day, I pack as much as I can, leaving the furniture for Steven or storage. I get a feeling I won’t be back, and that feels very okay. I drive the two hours down to the place where I was happy once. Maybe, the happiest I’ve ever been and hope for some magic.

CHAPTER 31

NOT A GREAT ROLE MODEL

MOLLIE NOW

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay another day or two?” Nat asks as I sip coffee at her kitchen table. “I miss you and your peachy ass.”

After signing about a million documents yesterday, I met Nat for dinner and spent the night at her house. Being with her and her adorable family brought me out of the funk I was in after officially selling my house. Her husband Mark and three-year-old, Penny are both the sweetest and funniest pair. I always get a little twinge when I’m with them. It’s not jealousy, but more of a yearning.

“Thank you for the butt compliment, but I have been on a roll writing and I need to get back.” I’m a big fat liar and she knows it. I miss Owen. As much as I love Nat and her family, my heart is too tender to be here for too long.

“Hmm, on a roll, huh? It has nothing to do with Mr. Magic Penis next door?”
