They both take their time reading and Mollie grips my hand under the table.

“This is real?” Carlos asks.

“If you want it to be real, you can stay here with us. It’s up to you,” I say. “We love you and would be thrilled if you would call us mom and dad.”

“And sistah!” Amelia shouts, crawling up into Carlos’ lap.

“That’s right, and sister,” Mollie says. “You don’t have to make any decisions-“

“Yes,” both Gabi and Carlos say at the same time, interrupting Mollie.

My dad whoops out a yell and we all cheer along with him. I look at Mollie and she is beaming. “It’s like a dream,” I say to her and she looks at me shaking her head.

“Nope, it’s the best reality.” She squeezes my hand and I know now that we were always meant to be, maybe there had to be a break in between, but we are here to be parents to these amazing kids, and to love them and each other fiercely.

Sometimes there’s a lull in the set of waves that hit the shore and you have to wait for a second set to pull you back in. I’m glad I waited.
