Hope flutters in my chest.Could it be Akim?

Or the police? But why would they be texting him?

Luka looks up from his phone, eyes wide and glassy. “There’s been a change of plans.”

Akim

“How long have you been working for Luka?” Rurik shouts in Regan’s face as she wakes up.

“What?” she groans, attempting to lift her hands to her head.

“Don’t try to hold your head up. Your hands are tied. Now, tell me how long you’ve been working for Luka and why,” he demands.

“What’s even happening? Who are you?” she asks desperately, failing to grasp her surroundings or who she’s being confronted by. “Do I know you?”

“Yeah, I just knocked you out an hour ago because you’re a sneaky bitch,” Rurik growls, tying her hands even tighter to get his point across.

“Okay, okay, you don’t need to be cruel,” I warn Rurik, motioning for him to ease up on her. She’s already incapacitated by the after-effects of the tranquilizer we gave to her. She doesn’t have the ability to fight back in the way he’s preparing for.

“Fine, fine,” Rurik says, lightening his grip. “But she still needs to tell us what happened to Delilah.”

“Right,” I say, stepping toward Regan. “We know you work for him, so tell us what you know, and we might consider keeping you alive.”

“Ugh, I don’tworkfor Luka. We’re inlove,” she states, emphasizingloveas if it’s a word she’d just learned from a foreign language.

She thinks he’s in love with her?

“Why are you cooperating with him? Don’t you know what he does to women like you, to women like Delilah?” I ask, growing angry at the thought of one woman putting another at risk just for a man’s attention.

“Because you wouldn’t. Because he needs me,” she begins, tossing her head and flipping her hair behind her shoulder. “He’s never met anyone like me before. That’s what he says.”

I roll my eyes. “Yeah, I’m sure. Do you know what he does with all the women he meets? The ones who fall for his lies?”

“Of course, I know. Do you think I’d still go along with it if I didn’t know better?” she replies, her voice groggy but gaining coherence.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out,” I reply. “You sold out your best friend to a human trafficker because you wanted to date him? That’s lower than anything I’ve ever heard in my life.”

She scoffs. “Ugh, Delilah isnotmy best friend. She thinks she is because I always complain about my other friends, but that doesn’t make her my favorite person ever. I can believe thatshewould think that, though,” she replies, rolling her eyes with contempt.

“Even still, giving her up to Luka was evil. You can’t possibly believe anything good would come of this,” I growl.

I know Luka is persuasive and good with his words, but there’s no way that this girl really believes that he’s in love with her. She’s psychotic.

“Whatever, you wouldn’t understand anyway. It’s not like whatever you and Delilah had was that deep. You were using her just as much as I did,” she spits.

My blood boils at the accusation, but I force myself to keep calm. “You can think whatever you want. It doesn’t matter to me. Whatdoesmatter is getting Delilah back safe, which might force me to put you at risk. It’s a dirty game you’ve chosen to play, and this is the only way you can make it right.”

She glances back at Rurik. “I don’t really care what you do, to be honest. Delilah is a bitch. Her boyfriend might have cheated on her, but it’s not like she didn’t drive him to it,” she replies.

Rurik wrinkles his nose at her then looks up at me. “I’m pretty sure the drugs are still talking. She’s not very spooked about the threats.”

Regan cackles wildly. “You two are funny guys. You can’t threaten a woman. I have like a dozen guys who will beat the crap out of you for that. Luka will too, probably.”

“Speaking of Luka…” I look at Rurik again. “Have you managed to contact him yet?”

“Yes, but I haven’t gotten a response yet. I texted him from her phone, so he’d know we weren’t fucking around,” he replies, turning the phone screen in my direction and showing me.
