He met my gaze, and I could have sworn I saw something in them. It was similar to how I was feeling myself, even if I had no real reason to. I'd only known Damien a matter of days, and we'd barely spent any time together, he wasn't supposed to be having this affect on me.

No one was.

I cleared my throat and settled the box down in front of me so I could dig into the dessert. It was as sticky and sweet as I expected it to be, and without meaning to, a small groan escaped from me.

"That good?" Damien asked.

I flushed at his question, realising how inappropriate my response must have seemed.

He took a bite himself and made a muffled sound of agreement. "Oh yes, that's good. What is it people say? It's better with sex?"

"Not when it's with the right person," I murmured.

His lips quirked as he studied me, and I knew his thoughts were going to some of the same places mine were right now. I couldn't even bring myself to think of our impromptu lunch as a mistake because there was something about him that put me at ease and made me want more of it.

"If the baklava is half as good as that, I'm going to consider relocating just to be closer to the restaurant," he said.

I laughed, setting aside the empty box and replacing it with the baklava one. I had no idea how we were going to cut it in half without causing a mess. "You'd have to give up your job at Jinx if you did that," I pointed out.

"Hmmm, I wouldn't want that," he agreed. "Do you think the wood will cut through the pastry?"

I shook my head. "I've tried before."

"Ah."

"The only idea I have is that we could just...bite it."

He nodded, not surprising me in the slightest. "Lady's first."

I swallowed hard, feeling the tension in the air as I raised the baklava to my lips and biting through the flaky honey-soaked pastry. Flavour exploded in my mouth even as I held the rest out for him to take.

I lifted my fingers to my lips to remove the stickiness, only realising what I was doing when I noticed Damien's intense gaze watching my every move. It didn't do anything to deter me.

The air around us was charged with something that had nothing to do with what I was a goddess of. I'd dated enough people to know what that was like, and this wasn't it.

It wasn't until the distant murmur of voices followed by a slamming door that I snapped out of it, realising that this wasn't the time or place for whatever this was. Especially now there were other people arriving to set up for the event.

But it was only making his offer of going for gyros later more appealing, even if I couldn't put my finger on why. For now, I needed to focus on my job and nothing else.

At least for now.

I checked the time and took a deep breath. Show time. A few hours and Horus' fundraiser would be over, and hopefully have been a raging success. Realistically, I had no doubt that it was going to be. Damien had done an amazing job with the menu and bar even on such short notice, and the room looked amazing.

And yet the doubts still crept in just a little bit. People in the room meant that there were more chances for things to go wrong.

I pushed the thoughts to the side, banishing them for the foreseeable future. My main focus now needed to be on things running slowly so when something did go wrong, I'd actually be able to deal with it.

There were a few early guests already moving around the room, but they were being well taken care of by the event staff.

Without meaning to, I gravitated to the bar and where Damien was currently giving instructions to one of the bartenders. He finished and turned to look at me, raking his gaze down the sea green dress that I knew accentuated every part of me.

A small thrill went right through me as I thought about what kinds of things he'd be thinking about right now.
