“I heard you.” He took a step towards us, and I swallowed. “I also heard her. She said no, now go.” When he pointed behind him, Kyle grumbled, taking one more look at me before he walked away.

Something told me it wouldn’t be his last attempt when he turned in the doorway to take another look. “We’ll talk later, Amanda,” he said before he was gone.

Sudden frustration flooded me. “What the hell, Drake?” I said louder than I had originally intended to. “I had the situation under control.”

“You were seconds from going on your first date with that sleezeball.” He looked unfazed, his piercing blue eyes intently burning into mine.

“I was not!” I recoiled when my voice bounced off the lunchroom walls around us. “I was not,” I repeated more quietly.

He nodded slowly, clearly not believing me. “If you say so. Next time I’ll just ask if I can bring a plus one to the wedding.”

Drake closed the distance between us until there was less than a foot of space, and I huffed. “I told you. I don’t need your help.” I emphasized every word, close enough to him to get a strong whiff of his cologne. He smelled sweet, like vanilla and sandalwood.

When he leaned into me, my heartbeat picked up and my breath hitched in my throat. Was he going to kiss me? What the hell? My mouth dried out. I surprised myself when my lips parted, and I sighed when his never got any closer.

“Fine,” he said, grabbing my apple from the table and bringing it to his lips. He took a big bite, smirking at me. “Next time, he’s all yours.”

Chapter fifteen

Drake

I slammed the office door behind me, following Kyle into the parking lot. He turned, leaning against the wall and lighting a cigarette when I strode up to him. My heart was pounding angrily.

Next time he’s all yours. No way in hell there would be a next time.

“What the hell was that, Drake?” he asked, taking a long drag and blowing the smoke back out. “You cock blocked me something fierce.”

I plucked the cigarette from between his lips, dropping it to the ground. He grumbled when I stepped on it, putting the ember out. “I didn’t cock block you at all. You didn’t have a chance in the first place.”

Kyle scoffed, pulling another cigarette from the box in his pocket and lighting it. He rested it against his lips for a second before taking a deep pull. “Of course I did, until you walked in there.”

I narrowed my eyes when he chuckled, moving his hand for another pull off the cigarette. Did he think I was playing around? Taking it from his fingers, I dropped it next to the first one. I twisted my toe, making sure the ember was extinguished before I stepped closer to him.

“Dude, Drake. What the fuck is your deal?” he half shouted, grabbing for the box again.

I looked pointedly at the pack in his hand. “Don’t.” He hesitated, fingering the lid for a moment like he was going to light another one before he thought better of it and stuffed the pack back in his pocket. “Back off Amanda,” I warned.

“Oh?” Kyle looked at me with a cheeky grin like he’d suddenly figured out some secret that wasn’t there. “Do you want me to stay away from her because she’s got a boyfriend? Or do you want me to stay away from her because you’re hung up on her?”

I slammed my hand on the brick wall next to his head, letting the smack from the palm of my hand echo briefly before I spoke. Kyle cringed. “I’m not hung up on anyone,” I said. “She’s out of your league, and she’s too young for you.” My hand stung slightly from hitting the wall, and I clenched it into a fist.

“Yeah, bro. If you say so.” Kyle pushed off with his foot, stepping towards me. His face was red, and it got darker the angrier he felt. His hands were shaking. “If she said no to me, she’s going to say no to you too.”

I lowered my voice. “I told you, I’m not going after her.” I smirked. “Plus, if I did, at least she and I are in the same league. You’re not even playing the same sport.” Clapping him on the shoulder, I turned to walk away.

“Are you fucking kidding me, Drake? Don’t be such a dick. You don’t get to make the rules about who she is and isn’t interested in.” His breathing was heavy, and I could hear it over the sound of my shoes against the asphalt and the cars that drove by on the main street in front of the office. “I’ll prove it to you.”

I whipped around, and Kyle winced when I stormed back towards him. “Don’t even think about it. You won’t like what happens to you if you do.”

Like a flip of a switch, Kyle snapped. The veins in his neck popped, and the red on his face turned a deep maroon. Both of his hands were closed in tight fists at his side that I wasn’t completely sure he didn’t plan to throw in my face. I braced myself when he stepped forward.

“No, you listen to me,” he snarled. “I don’t know who the fuck you think you are getting to decide who I can and can’t talk to, but that’s not how this works. That woman is a ten, and you know it. The only reason you don’t want me to take her out is because you know I’d show her the time of her life and then she wouldn’t be interested in you anymore. If she even is in the first place.”

He took one heaving breath after the next. When I opened my mouth to say something to him, he started again. This time, he leaned towards me, shoving his pointer finger in my face and shaking it. I stood and stared at him, not moving while he shook.

“You better watch your back, Drake Moore. You think you’re the shit because you’re Phil’s favorite, but I can’t wait to knock you from your pedestal.” He spat on the ground next to me, unclenching one of his fists to pull his cigarettes from his pocket. “Starting with your little girlfriend.”

I nodded with a short laugh. “Are you done?” I asked him, and when he flicked the lighter and the end of the cigarette in his mouth lit up bright red, I took it as a yes. “If you go near her again, I’ll personally see to it you lose your job. You won’t sign a contract in this state again. Are we clear?”
