I sighed, closing the licensing test prep book in front of me. I don’t know why I thought the breakroom was a good spot to hide from him—he’d found me here before. Realistically there wouldn’t be a good spot at the office for me to hide. I wasn’t sure why I was hiding at all.

“For what?” I turned to look at him, hopeful I wouldn’t get caught in his stare.

He cocked his head. “For dinner?”

“I’m not hungry.”

He shrugged, reaching for the now closed book in front of me and pulling it back towards him. “You still need to eat dinner. What about Thai food? Is that better?”

Tugging my book back from him, I glared. “I said it doesn’t happen again.”

“I asked you to go to dinner, not to ride my cock.” When he said it, I looked around the room, panicked someone else might’ve heard him. Then I shook my head anyway.

“I already have plans,” I said, pausing to come up with an excuse. “I’m going to study with Chase.” I nodded to the other side of the room where another intern was sitting with his lunch and his own copy of the book open in front of him.

When Drake crossed his arms, I was sure he didn’t believe me. “Is that so?”

“It is,” I said, trying to stop my voice from shaking.

“And it has nothing to do with the fact you’ve been avoiding me all day?” He scooted his chair closer to me, and I gasped. My breath caught in my throat, choking me. I coughed.

My head whipped towards him, and I dropped my jaw. “I haven’t been avoiding you. I’ve been… busy?” My voice lifted at the end, dropping any confidence I could’ve faked. Drake lifted his brow.

“I know you’re hung up on Saturday night, angel,” he said in a low voice. “I know you can’t stop thinking about it, and that’s why you pressed your thighs together when I walked into the room. It’s the same reason you’re holding your breath right now. Isn’t it?”

I released my breath. “It’s not true. You’re the one who’s been thinking about it.” Oh. good comeback, Amanda. I groaned internally.

Drake’s eyes darkened. “Of course I have. All I’ve thought about since I left your bed is the way you looked falling apart beneath me.” His breathing was heavy, and when his muscles twitched, I wondered if he would throw me over his shoulder and carry me off again. Part of me hoped he would.

“It was a onetime thing.” I choked on the last word.

“I think we both know that’s not true.” Did we?

“I need to go.” The chair scraped across the floor, drawing attention from everyone in the room when I stood up. I gathered my things, hurrying to where Chase was standing. He looked confused when I smiled at him, and I could feel Drake’s amused stare fixed on me.

I cleared my throat quietly. “Uh, hey, Chase.” I dropped my voice so Drake couldn’t hear what I was saying. “Do you want to study a bit? I hear this test is brutal.”

He looked over my shoulder to where Drake was still staring at us, and when he swallowed, I followed the lump in his throat. “I don’t think so, Amanda. It’s not a good idea. Sorry.”

The rejection made my chest squeeze. Had I done something wrong? “Oh? Why not?”

“You know,” he said, nodding subtly at Drake. “It’s pretty well known you’re off-limits or whatever.”

Anger seethed through me. “Off-limits? That’s ridiculous.”

“Sorry. I should…” Chase said. “Good luck on the test.”

He left me standing there, and I could almost hear Drake behind me preparing to tell me he told me so. Instead of turning around and yelling at him the way I wanted to, I straightened my back and followed Chase out of the breakroom.

“Amanda,” Drake called. I ignored him, and when his chair slid across the floor, I didn’t stop.

I continued walking down the hallway and out the front door to the parking lot. Without stopping, I dug my keys out of my purse and clicked to unlock my car. When I threw my bag on the front seat, it tipped on its side and sticky notes, pens, and miscellaneous items fell to the floor.

“Shit,” I grumbled, panicking for a second. Did I have enough time to put everything back in my bag before Drake caught up?

Then I saw him crossing the parking lot. “Amanda!” he called again. I shook my head, quickly climbing into the driver’s seat of my car. He grabbed the door before I could close it, positioning himself between it and the car. “Don’t run from me.”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said, starting my car and leaning over the center console to gather my things from the floor and shove them back in my bag. “Why won’t you leave me alone?” I asked when he was still standing there.
