“Ma’am,” Officer Nelson warned her, grabbing for the handcuffs on his belt.

“No!” Amanda continued anyway. “Dallas assaulted me, and Drake was just protecting me!” She sounded panicked, and I could practically hear her heartbeat in her voice.

“Angel, it’s okay,” I told her, turning around and putting my arms behind my back when the officer directed me to.

She stomped her foot. “It is not okay! That son of a bitch attacked me! He should be the one in handcuffs right now. Not you!” Amanda was hysterical, and the officers behind me huffed. I gave her a pleading look that I hoped asked her to trust me.

“You need to calm down. There is a video of the attack on Mr. Hall.” Officer Trainor was unamused.

Amanda scowled at him before turning to me. “I’m going to get you out of there as soon as I can.” She reached forward, framing my face and kissing me. I savored the sweet taste of her lips before the officer tugged at my arms, causing a sharp pain in my shoulders.

“Time to go,” he said, turning me towards the car and nudging me to take the first step.

Officer Trainor stepped forward with a smug grin on his face, and I narrowed my eyes. “You have the right to remain silent,” he said, telling me my rights as Amanda scurried behind us. He opened the door to the car, putting his hand on my head and forcing me into the backseat.

Before he closed the door, Amanda looked over his shoulder. “I’d do anything for you too, Drake. I will. I promise!”

The officer slammed the door before I could respond. I’m going to get you out of there.

I grumbled. “Fuck.”

Chapter thirty-five

Amanda

I held my breath while the car that held Drake drove away. When the headlights were no longer in sight, the air rushed from my lungs. I fell to my knees. The driveway was rough under my knees, leaving scratches I was sure would be there but didn’t care about.

“Shit, shit, shit,” I mumbled, trying to get my hands to stay still. They wouldn’t, and I cried. Tears ran through the makeup I had been so worried about, surely pulling lines of mascara down my cheeks.

Drake had been arrested.

Drake was in jail.

My heart stopped beating. The ground beneath me gave out. I couldn’t see past the tears.

“What do I do?” I screamed, covering my face.

I debated grabbing my keys and getting in the car, following him to the station, and begging they let him go, but I didn’t think any amount of my begging was going to appeal to the officers. I couldn’t stay at home, though, especially when the only reason Drake got arrested was because of me. He wouldn’t have been involved with Dallas at all if it weren’t for me, and he’d probably be home safe right now.

I groaned, climbing off the rough cement driveway. My legs wobbled for a moment before I was able to regain my balance. I held my hands out at my sides like it would prevent me from falling back to the ground. Taking a deep, shaky breath, I nodded.

“You can do this.” I clenched my teeth. Could I? I nodded again in an attempt to convince myself. “Yeah, you can do this.”

I wasn’t going to be able to do it alone, though. I didn’t even know where to start or who to call. Was I supposed to just go to the station, or did I need to bring somebody with me? I didn’t know the first thing about bail or bonds or when to call a lawyer. Did Drake have a lawyer?

I knew exactly who would help me.

“Brys!” I shouted, throwing the back door to Pour Decisions open and ignoring the thud when it slammed into the wall. “I need your help!” I was frantic, my voice shaking while I screamed.

My heart was racing, and I could hear my blood pumping in my ears. Deep breaths burned my throat and tried to fill my lungs, but it felt like someone was sitting on my chest. Panic. I leaned against the wall, bracing my arms against it to stop myself from falling.

“Brys!” I screamed again.

Mackenzie rushed out of the office with a fear-stricken look etched on her face. “Amanda?” When she saw me against the wall with the remains of my makeup smudged across my cheeks, she ran to me. “What’s wrong? What happened? Are you okay?” The alarm in her voice matched the panic in mine.

I shook my head, gasping for breath and suddenly unable to explain the way the police had hauled Drake out of my house less than half an hour ago. Where was he now? Was he okay? Tears I thought I had run out of flooded down my cheeks, a sob breaking from my chest. My best friend put her arms around me, leading me away from the wall.
