Bryson groaned, resting his elbows on the table and dropping his head into his hands. “If you hurt her, I’ll be the one sitting on that side of the table in the ugly uniform.” He glared for a second before the chuckle he couldn’t hold back escaped his lips.

“If I ever hurt her, I’ll let you.” I laughed with him, hopeful he was really okay with it. “But you don’t have to worry about it. Somehow she’s the love of my life, and I’ll spend every day I have left showing her that.”

“You better.”

“You just couldn’t keep your hands to yourself, huh?” Elliott asked. He looked at me from across the table like he was entertained. His eyes were wide, and he had an amused smirk on his face that gave me a premature rush of relief and excitement.

I shrugged, snorting. “I didn’t use my hands.”

“Do I even want to know what happened?” He tapped his fingers against the table in mock irritation. Really, I think he was more excited to know than angry about it.

“You already know.” I cocked my head.

“Dallas,” he said. “Don’t have to worry about him much longer. Appears he went and saw your girl the other night. Ronan is making sure that doesn’t happen again.”

“Good.” I nodded at the file and laptop in front of him. “So?”

He grinned. “He found it.” He reached into the file and pulled out a disc, holding it up.

“I want to see it.”

Elliott opened his laptop and slipped the disc in the drive, opening the video and playing it. I watched Amanda start to walk away from him, and when Dallas yanked her back by her hair, my blood boiled. She looked ready to defend herself until he slapped her, and I stood up, knocking the chair to the ground.

“That motherfucker,” I grumbled, clenching my hands into fists. “I should’ve fucking killed him.”

My lawyer laughed, putting his hand up. “Maybe you wait to say stuff like that until you’re actually out of jail.”

“Attorney client confidentiality or something, right?” I smirked, winking at him. “This will get me out of here?”

Elliott nodded. “This paired with the report Amanda filed is enough for just cause.” He half shrugged. “And maybe a little bit of a strong arm for him to drop the charges.”

“Strong arm?” I furrowed my brow, curious.

“Let’s just say the charges are being dropped, and Dallas is moving his life and all aspects of his business elsewhere. He won’t be back,” Elliott explained. “That also means the building he just bought is back on the market.”

I laughed. “I know just the real estate agent to handle that.”

Elliott closed his laptop and stood up, pointing over his shoulder to the door. “What do you say we get you home first?”

Chapter forty-four

Amanda

I told myself frozen chicken nuggets a third day in a row was acceptable as I took the tray out of the oven and grabbed the rubber spatula from the bin on the counter. I wasn’t hungry, but my stomach growled. Chicken nuggets would suffice.

It was quiet in the house. My TV had paused the marathon of crappy reality shows, asking me if I was still watching, and I stared at the remote I wouldn’t grab. I hadn’t heard the front door open until the hinges squeaked.

Someone was in my house.

I gasped, holding the spatula up in front of me and sneaking around the corner, unsure who I would find. My blood pumped in my ears when I thought about the possibility it was Dallas, and then I remembered the guy who was supposed to be watching the house. Was he still out front? I took a slow, deep breath and an even slower step forward.

When I turned the corner, I bumped into a muscular wall. The scream that left my lungs bounced off the living room walls, and I waved the spatula in the direction of the intruder. Panic filled my veins until the intruder laughed, and I opened my eyes.

“That’s your weapon? A rubber spatula? We’re going to have to work on your self-defense skills, angel.” Drake.

I screamed again, dropping the spatula to the ground with a quiet thud before jumping and wrapping my arms around his neck. He grabbed me just as my lips met him in a desperate embrace. Every bit of fear and anxiety I’d had in the last week ran from my body. Drake was here. He was home.
