Whoever he was, he would be haunting my dreams for a long time. His touch lingered on my body and my skin felt those delicious tingles all over again, as if I was still pressed against him.

His handsome face was eternally engraved in my mind. His deep voice still replaying in my ears with promising words of both safety and depravity.

I was spiraling into a not-so-innocent vision of the both of us, together inside that bathroom. If I had walked towards him to get my jacket, would he have somehow caved? Would I?

He was just too sinful to be true. I couldn’t be blamed for imagining lustful things about him. His taste, his touch, his…

Oh my God! STOP! What the hell is wrong with you?

The doors finally opened on the fifty-fifth floor, pulling a sigh of relief from my chest. That ride was far less problematic than the intruding thoughts of that mystery man. Those had worked me up in a way I absolutely didn’t need to be right now.

I quickly strode over to the reception area where a blonde, blue-eyed woman was standing behind a desk exactly the same as the one down in the lobby. She had a professional look going on with her dark blue pencil skirt suit, high heels, and a chiffon blouse under her open suit jacket. She was extremely beautiful and fit right in with the surroundings.

The whole place was impeccably decorated, a clean but luxurious look to it. Again, light wood and white was the style that covered the entire place, from the walls to the furniture. It had a Nordic decor feeling to it all, much classier and definitely more expensive, but still simple.

Exuberant! That’s the word.

And so was she. The personification of corporate elegance.

“Good morning,” I said as I approached the desk. “My name is Jamie Harden. I had an interview scheduled for today?” I was wrong when I thought I had the jitters before. I was full-on shaking right now.

“Good morning, Miss Harden. As I’ve mentioned in my email, we are a little delayed today, so I will have to ask you to please wait for your turn in the waiting room. I am so sorry for the inconvenience. It’s right down the hall to your right,” she said, flashing me a bright white smile that contrasted with her burgundy lipstick.

My heart flipped in my chest at the sound of her words. I hadn’t seen the email. The word delayed had never sounded so good to me in my whole life.

“Thank you so much.” I smiled back before turning towards the hallway, my walk gaining a new springy effect as I contained the victory dance I wanted to do.

My opportunity still wasn’t lost!

That email she mentioned must have been the one I started reading before bumping into tall, dark, and troublesome. That man just swept every rational thought from my mind. I hadn’t given my phone a second thought after our encounter.

The waiting room was a men’s only club. Testosterone ranked as high as the sky as they all looked me over like the odd one out.

I was.

There were five of them waiting, most of which were around my age, maybe a little older, except one that was surely in his late fifties, if I was being kind.

Funny enough, he was the only one who made me uncomfortable. His gaze was deep and unsettling, sending a frozen shiver down my spine. His ice-blue eyes clung to me like leeches, sucking my blood from my face and draining me of all color. The crooked smile that crept onto his lips was too suggestive of the thoughts he had running through his mind.

Red fucking flag.

He sat straight in a poise of regal posture, as if he had something over all of us, allowing just his eyes to dip onto my pronounced cleavage.

I clung to my suit jacket, shielding my body from his unwanted stare.

I didn’t hesitate to take the most isolated seat I could find, still next to another one of the men waiting, but if push came to shove, I’d sit on a pile of needles if that meant being away from that man.

Creep.

I wasn’t sure why my palms had started to sweat while my knees danced to the pace of my uneasy heart. Reality was hitting me like a ton of bricks. If I didn’t get this job, I wouldn’t be able to stay in New York for much longer.

Crawling back to Jacksonville and giving my father the satisfaction of witnessing my failure was something I’d try to avoid at all cost.

I’d had enough of his degrading words. I’d had enough of him telling me how big of a disappointment I was. I’d had enough of the guilt he tried to throw on me for…

“Jamie Harden?” A tall brunette interrupted my thoughts. “Mr. Dornier is ready to see you.” I nodded once, getting up from my seat and walking towards her as I fixed my jacket again, trying to look as conservative as it would allow me while purposely ignoring the pair of eyes I felt following me.

The woman looked at me with a warm smile and an amused expression on her face, waiting to guide me through the double doors behind her.
