My Barbie had come to pay a visit.

Chapter4

Barbie

I’d never once cursed myself for being short, but I prayed for a couple of more inches of height so I could see into the glass of my savior’s room. I stood on my tippy-toes to get a better look into his room. For a few blurry seconds, I could see Fin sitting on the bed. I couldn’t make out much expect the vibrant neck tattoos that came out of his white straitjacket.

I stood still, exhaling the stress that came from the anticipation, and softly knocked on the door. There was no sound, and I had to press my ear against the door, hoping to hear anything, but there was nothing. I knocked a little harder this time, hoping I wouldn’t attract the aides to come back. The sound of rustling and then bare feet slapping against the marble floor as he made his way over to the door.

Even through the glass, he looked intimating. His darkened eyes held mine with intense interest, as though he never expected the innocent girl to go willingly to the wolf’s den.

Under the heat of his gaze, I awkwardly raised my hand and waved. “Hi.”

He didn’t respond.

When the aides came and took my savior away, the room fell silent except for the whimpering body lying on the floor in front of me. I watched as blood spilled out of him, words trying to form but not making sense. A few minutes later, more aides came to take the body away. As I watched them cover and drag away Dr. Turner, the realization of everything that had just happened washed over me.

I came to Murdoch Home to get better, hoping to rid myself of the sinful pleasure that continually built up between my legs. Dr. Turner tried to rape me, tried to use my problems against me. But my brother with the bloodstained lips saved me. It was that reason alone that I had to find him after they took him away. Before a nurse could ask me questions, I left the room and followed the aides that took him.

As they turned down an unfamiliar hallway, my heart dropped into my stomach. The air was thick, with a bone-chilling cold that made me shiver uncontrollably. Doors loomed on either side, each one evenly spaced and closed tightly. The sound of pounding echoed through the corridor, paired with screams that pierced my eardrums like shards of glass. My skin crawled with unease as I could only imagine what horrors lay behind those doors.

My ballet flats skimmed over the glossy floor, each step echoing amongst the deranged ramblings of patients locked behind thick doors. Their frenzied words bounced off the walls, taunting and haunting me as I continued to glide forward.

“Help me!”

“I’ll kill you!”

“Let me rape you.”

All the disgusting and taunting remarks quickened my pace. I was worried that one of the aides would stop me, but honestly, no one was looking at me. It was as though I were invisible as I followed behind them.

The aides stopped in front of a white door, its paint chipped and peeling, at the end of the dimly lit hallway. In the center of the door, there was a square glass panel that allowed a clear view inside, and above that, the number ten in big bold black letters. I burned the memory of where his room was located into my mind for later, when I could find the time to see him again.

And now, standing here in front of him, my words failed me.

What do I say? Thank you so much for slicing a man’s throat for me? Also, I don’t know if you remember, but I’m your little sister and I’ll do anything for you. That didn’t sound right. I looked up again into the square glass and saw that his expression never changed. He didn’t understand why I was here. Was he upset that I’d come?

“Hi. I—I just wanted to say thank you for saving me back there. I feel bad?—”

A sudden eruption of laughter silenced me. It was a guttural, savage laugh that seemed to emanate from the very depths of his being.

“What’s funny?” I spat, feeling my face warm.

“Barbie, don’t thank me. I didn’t do that for you.” His voice sounded cruel, almost condescending. “If anyone is going to slide their cock between your legs, it’s going to be me. If anyone gets to rape you, it will beme.”

Heat spread through me as I imagined him fucking me. I squeezed my legs tightly, wanting to relieve some of the pressure that built up from his cruel words. When the tightness in my stomach settled, I turned and slid down the door, propping my back against it.

For a long while, there was no sound on the other side. My pulse quickened at the thought of him wanting me to leave, but then I heard the rustling of fabric sliding down the metal. He was sitting with his back against the door, too.

Something small flipped in my chest and I smiled. Even with a door separating us, I could still feel him. My flesh and blood. The one person who’d protected me all those years ago, before we got separated.

“To be fair, if that was really your intention, wouldn’t it have happened by now? I mean, I’ve been here for an entire week and we only just met today,” I said, proud of myself for not butchering or stumbling on my words.

Laughter filled the silence, bringing a smile to my face. I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that I could make him laugh. I gave myself a mental pat on the back for this minor victory.

“You keep surprising me, Barbie,” he said with hidden amusement.

“Why do you keep calling me Barbie? My name is Barbara.”
