“It’s way too early for the trio from hell.”

“Hey.” Chiara swats my chest.

“Where were you going to hide?” asks Alessandra, those curious eyes peering into me.

I roll my eyes at her and say, “I was about to go for a run.”

“I came prepared.” Alessandra gestures to the running gear she’s wearing.

When we’re outside, Chiara pushes me from behind.

“Come on, already.”

She and Aurora hop into golf carts, driving down the pavement connecting all four mansions. I take off and catch up with Alessandra. She has been the exception since the beginning. With my other best friend and sister-in-law, I can be myself. I don’t even know why, but with her, there is no filter between my mouth and my brain.

“They want me to marry.”

“Wanna talk about that?”

“You already knew.”

“Hayden and I don’t have secrets.”

“So, it’s an intervention to see if I am one second away from losing my shit?”

“Well, are you?”

“Ask me that again after a few months of celibacy.”

She opens her mouth, but I quickly add. “Don’t give me you and my brother as examples. That only makes me pity you.”

“Not everyone copes by having sex.”

“Last time I checked, you were a trauma surgeon, not a shrink.”

That makes her stop talking, but knowing her, it never lasts.

“I lost a patient yesterday.”

I stop running, and she does the same. Her bright eyes well up, and I place my hands on her shoulders. “I know you did everything you could... there is no ‘if’ with you. You can’t save everyone.”

“He was young, Cam. He had an entire life ahead of him. It makes me worry about you.”

“What does he have to do with me?”

She sends me a heated look.

“I know you’re not happy.”

“Why can’t you stop, Alessandra? Always trying to save the unsavable.”

“I’ll never give up.”

“What do you want?”

“For your marriage to be happy.”

“That won’t be the case.”
