I like it—it’s a bit of a rebel streak with a dose of fashionably casual and a splash of sexy.

The cashier tells me the total amount, half-shocked, half in apology. I can afford it. I really don’t spend my money. Fifty percent goes to non-profits for sick children and I save the rest. It’s always good to be prepared for good and bad times.

I want to see the girls’ faces, so I take the elevator upstairs to the spa area. An employee directs me to the restaurant, where Aurora, Chiara, and Alessandra are engrossed in their discussion.

“I like her, and she fits, right? I mean, she’s the best thing that’s happened to him,” Aurora says animatedly. My heart melts.

“And that’s the problem,” Alessandra sighs.

“Do you know something? Forget it, of course you know,” Chiara adds.

“His issues run deep, but I know he feels something.”

Aurora’s shoulders slump. “I wish he’d let someone in...”

Having eavesdropped enough, I step out from my hiding place. They glance at me in appreciation but continue their conversation like a well-oiled machine.

“Can we help you?” Chiara says, not one hint of recognition in her voice.

I giggle and her jaw drops.

“Shut the fuck up,” she screeches and stands up. We hug, shifting from one side to the other like complete idiots.

“You look amazing.”

“Thank you.”

Chiara drags me to the seat next to her. “Honestly, it’s an absolute blasphemy to hide this hair and skin. You’re lucky I like you. You look gorgeous.”

“How are you feeling?” Aurora asks.

“Relieved. Confident. Sexy.”

“I could never pull that look off. Your legs are perfect. They were made to wear skirts,” Alessandra says.

Getting praised by these beautiful women makes me feel even better.

Aurora’s phone rings and she raises a finger for us to quiet down.

“Yes, no problem. We’ll wait, Daniel.”

“What happened?” Chiara asks.

As she looks in my direction, amusement curls up her lips. “You must have bought out the entire store because Daniel said there is no room left in the car.”

We double over with laughter. We have a late dinner and drink to my newfound self until the driver returns from dropping off my bags.

I keep touching the tips of my hair.

“This haircut was made for you.” Alessandra takes her phone and snaps a selfie of us. She sends it to the group, and for the first time, I feel like I truly belong. These three have become more like family than friends. And that’s because I’m truly embracing myself.

I can’t wait to visit my parents tomorrow and show them how far I have come.

“Thank you, girls,” I say, voice thick with emotion.

“You’re part of the gang. Hello?!” Chiara says, giving me an intense look.

“We’re there for each other. Always,” adds Aurora.
