“Just a second.”

I leave her and go to my office. Opening the safe, I take out a jewelry box with a diamond necklace I ordered for her. I find her in the middle of the foyer, reapplying her red lipstick.

Flicking the box open, her eyes fall on the diamond necklace.

“I can’t . . . this—”

“Do you like it?” I ask, interrupting.

“Of course, what’s not to like?” she says, caressing it with the tip of her finger.

I suppress a smile, put the box on the counter, and hold the necklace in my hands.

She turns around and I clasp it shut behind her neck, my fingers grazing her skin. She holds her breath. It takes everything in me not to push her against the wall and take her right here and now. I place a kiss on her exposed shoulder, watching her reflection in the mirror. “As if it were made for you, which it is.”

Emotions glisten in her eyes as she rubs her fingers gingerly across the necklace.

“Why?”

“A gift, for when you would be ready to come out with me.”

“Why now then?”

“Because your neck deserves to wear only diamonds.” I wrap my arms around her waist and lean my chin on her shoulder.

“Cameron . . .”

“What are you doing to me? So careless of you to dangle something so pure, so exquisite in front of me... It’s dangerous. I want to devour you from the inside out, so it’s only me you want. I want to consume you, just like you do to me.”

Her eyes fill with heavy emotions. Seconds pass as we get lost in each other.

“You’re not playing fair.”

“I intend to win.”

Pressing my hand on her back, we walk out toward my gray Aston Martin.

I open the door for her, and she gets inside. In the car, her sweet scent and presence envelop all my senses. With her hands tucked in her lap, she fidgets with her fingers. I place my palm on her leg, giving a light squeeze. It remains there throughout the drive. Soft music plays as she steals glances at me.

Boston pulsates with life around us, but my attention is either on the road or on her.

I park in front of a skyscraper downtown and toss my keys to the valet. Rounding the car, I open the door for her. A smile grazes her lips and I take her hand in mine.

We step inside one of the country’s best restaurants when we get off the elevator. The spectacular view over Boston’s Seaport District is a bonus.

A maître d’ greets us, showing us to a private section. On the way to our table, Violet glues herself to my side as multiple people greet me. Some turn their gazes to us, whispering in hushed tones.

I pull the chair out for her, and she sits down.

After the chef tells us he’ll prepare something special, a waiter pops open a bottle of champagne, pouring the bubbly liquid into two glasses. While she looks out the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city below bathed in artificial light, I look at her.

“It’s beautiful.”

“You are.”

“Cameron, what are you doing?”

It’s the first time she’s looked at me with vulnerability in two days.
