“Your apology won’t change a thing. I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“I get that you’re not okay with this, but I have to do this.”

“Yes, I’ve heard that one before, and it could have ended in tragedy,” he grumbles.

The expression on his face turns terrified, and he adds, “Every one of us has a certain fear we could never escape. Cameron’s is guilt.”

“I know.”

“Then congratulations.”

“Why?”

“You won his heart, and you’ll be the one to break it.”

We spend the drive to the airport in stiff silence.

When we reach the sleek jet, I say, “I will be fine.”

“What did you think that I would escort you to the jet and go back home? Cam might forgive me for this, but he would kill me if I didn’t protect you.”

“He’s obsessed with protecting me, but he’s mourning someone else.”

Cato scoffs, “Women and their jealousy. A man could give you everything and still you would compare.”

He shakes his head, and I huddle into the buttery leather seat of the plane.

As I step out of the airport in Las Vegas in my black outfit, the sun heats my skin. There is endless desert and blaring sun rays. I already miss the crisp air of Boston.

“I like you more without your getup.”

“Me too.”

He nods, and a black SUV takes us away from the tarmac.

“I’ll blend in, mostly. But always stay where I can see you,” Cato warns.

“Okay.”

“Good, then. Cheers to your three days of freedom.”

He opens his mouth to say something else, but nothing comes out, which makes me nervous.

“Please, tell me.”

“Of the four of us, he is the most volatile. We’ve managed to keep him in check, but you just might be undoing our hard work.”

His phone rings, and he has a heated chat with Kieran. When Cato hangs up, he drags a hand down his face.

“Cameron knows.”

Of course he does. I have a chip he can easily track. Maybe that will ease his worry a bit. My heart twists, guilt knotting up my insides.

We drive to the hotel in silence. I stare at my phone, but no text pops up.

After we check into the Reyes Hotel, an impressive building of glass and cement topped by a golden R, we take the elevators to the tenth floor. We have two suites next to each other.

Cato says, “I have to check in with Kian, the owner. It won’t take long. Keep the door locked and don’t answer if anyone knocks.”
