I change quickly into some slacks and a button-down shirt. When I move to leave, Violet blocks my way.

“Cameron. Stop punishing me, please. I love you. I do... I love you so much with every beat of my heart, every breath I take, every second of my life. Let’s talk, let me explain. Please.”

Her love declaration soothes my bruised heart, but her action dented my trust.

“You fucking tore me apart. You did this to me. I hurt so fucking much that I can’t think straight...”

She clasps her hand over her chest, tears brimming in her eyes. I let out a disgruntled sound and sidestep her. I have to get out of this house to think straight again and gather myself.

I speed to the compound and find Cato and the others in the conference room. The ceiling vibrates lightly with the music from upstairs. My life was peaceful when I could enjoy those parties, yet I’d take my life with her at my side over anything else.

I march up to Cato and yank him from his chair.

“Just hit me already and get it over with.”

“You . . . I want to kill you.”

“I made her a promise and, like the smart woman she is, she held me to it.”

Anger and sadness rattle my insides.

“Cameron, you’re my fucking brother. I would never betray you.”

I shove my hands through my hair, pacing around.

“I can’t believe you fucking assholes are making me use one of my favors,” Hayden says, yanking his knife from his pocket. Ah, yes, the famous favors. We can ask each other anything, and must comply, regardless of what it is. Hayden shoots daggers at us. That leaves Kieran the only one with two favors—the asshole smirks.

“From now on, even if it involves our women, we tell each other first,” Hayden says.

Hayden drags the knife down his palm. Kieran follows, then Cato. I take the knife and cut my palm, then we all shake hands.

Do I feel better? Fucking no.

Grabbing a bottle, I recline in the armchair, sulking.

“Cam, we all know what you’re feeling. You’re so angry, you want to destroy the world. But you can’t win against your heart. From now on, you’ll have a weak spot, your own vulnerability. Accept it. We don’t fear them, we conquer them, and accept what we can’t change,” Kieran says.

“She kissed someone else,” I mumble.

“My wife would have fucked someone else just to spite me. And let’s be clear, he kissed her, and she pushed him away immediately,” Cato says, exasperated.

After I finish the bottle, I look for another, but the shelf is empty.

I head upstairs, knowing a bottle of whiskey is at the bar. The party is in full swing, the gambling section is packed, fucking is well underway, and the crowd is lively.

Same scenario, different night.

A brunette appears in my face, but the bottle calls to me.

“You haven’t been here for a while.” She bats her lashes and pushes her breasts up. She’s doing everything in her power to seduce me, and it pisses me off. A few more steps separate me from the promise of alcoholic bliss. I am about to sidestep her when a hand snatches around my elbow, dragging me back.

Violet looks from the woman to me. With her fakest smile, she says, “Do you mind if I have a word with my husband?”

The woman huffs, turns on her heel and flips her hair back. “I’ll be around.”

No, she won’t, because she just got herself blacklisted by her unprofessional demeanor.

“How did you find me?” I ask her.
