Page 174 of Sinner's Salvation

They look at me, apologies written in their eyes. I let them know it’s okay with a nod. Women are stubborn creatures, and mine is their queen.

I drive after her and roll down my window. “Get in the car.”

Violet raises that pert nose in the air and looks ahead. “No. And I want a driver’s license.”

“Okay.”

She looks at me curiously.

“You make me unreasonable. I’m quite a reasonable guy.”

She scoffs and rolls her eyes at me. If someone were to film this, we would be the laughingstock of the internet: three cars flanking a golf cart, but in that golf cart is the woman I love.

When we finally reach home, I get out of my car. I catch her, grab her elbow, and turn her to me.

Palming her face, I confess. “I am in love with you and nothing in my entire life has ever frightened me more.”

One moment, she remains perfectly still; the next, the brightest smile grazes her lips. “Well, I feel the same.”

“You’re my soul’s life energy, my heart’s steady beat, the needed nurture for my body–a sinner’s salvation. I swear I will never give you another reason to feel insecure about what you mean to me.”

“Swear you love me and you don’t say it because you think I need to hear it.”

I grab her by the back of her neck, pulling her to my face. I dip my face and look straight into her eyes.

“I love. You.” Kiss. “I love. You.” Kiss. “I love. You.” Kiss. Brushing my nose against hers, I add, “In my universe, there’s only one star, you. I live for you. Everything I am is yours.”

“I love you too, Cameron. So, so much. Everything in me is desperately in love with you.”

“Good.”

I take her hand in mine, and we rush up the stairs.

In front of our bed, I push her down onto the mattress. “Feel me, feel my need, feel my love for you. There was no woman before you. There never will be one after you, because you’re the one I want, the one I love, and the one I want to spend my life with.”

Her eyes turn glassy, and she drags me toward her. I lose myself in my woman—hands interlocked, bodies connected, hearts beating the same rhythm.

When she comes, I follow her. I would follow her anywhere, even to the furthest corners of the earth.

When our breathing steadies, she turns in my arms. “I was jealous, and I’ve never experienced that. I wish I was okay with you keeping that room. I’m just so damn relieved you’ve put it behind you.”

I tip her face up and kiss her. “Why would you be jealous of someone I only felt guilt for? Nothing happened between me and her. It was a friendship that could never materialize into anything more. I would never take a woman when she doesn’t have a say.

“After my time in Silas’s club, I only fucked women who wanted me. Do you get that? I didn’t care as long as they wanted me. But then you came and showed me what desire feels like. You have consumed me, heart, body, and soul. I belong to you.”

Dragging in a lungful of air, I continue baring myself to her so she never distrusts my feelings again. “I want everything with you, you maddening, perfect woman. You’re strong, you’re beautiful, you’re independent, and still, you love me. A man filled with flaws, leading a double life. If I were a better man, I would let you go. But that would kill me. Your absence killed me. The thought that you preferred someone who isn’t a clusterfuck like I am.”

She places her cheek on my chest and draws patterns on my chest with her fingertips. “There’s no one else for me. Never could be, Cameron. Like you, it’s only your light flickering in my sky. I want you, only you, and this life with you. You freed me and you saved me.”

Her words cleanse and absolve me of my past, baptizing me for a new life.

“You’ll never be totally free. You have to know this. I’ll do everything in my power—”

She places a finger on my lips and says, “I know, and it will be enough. You are worth it.”

“I need you.”

“I’m yours. Are you asking?”
