“You could have died.”

“It wasn’t your fault.”

He snaps his head to me. My tormented man. I love this man with everything in me.

“I’m well aware I’m undeserving of you, but for you, I’ll be the man whose life’s mission will be to lay paradise at your feet.”

His words seep through my skin, going straight to my heart. I believe him wholeheartedly.

“We eliminated the threat.”

I nod, accepting him completely and irrevocably.

“I love you.”

“I love you, my love, my life, my reason.”

I won’t ever tire of hearing him say that, knowing I have a part of him no one else has ever had.

“I would not survive losing you.”

I caress his cheek, and he leans into my touch.

“I’m not going anywhere. As long as it’s in my hands, I will never abandon you.”

“As if I could live without you.”

I take a deep breath and wince.

His eyes pin me in place. “Don’t you ever do that again—don’t you ever take a bullet meant for me. Swear it.”

“I can’t.”

“So damn stubborn.”

“We’re a team. Get used to that. I have you. You have me. That’s how this works.”

His entire face brightens. “I love you desperately.”

The door opens, and my parents and sister walk inside. Serena rushes to my side and hugs me. I flinch at the pain. I look at my husband, who opens his mouth, about to say something, but I squeeze his hand, and he drops it. He would stop anyone from touching me.

My parents rush to my other side. My mom’s eyes are bloodshot and puffy. My father’s face is ashen.

“Could we have a moment?”

Cameron’s body pulls taut, and he sends my father a murderous look. He’s about to say something but I cut him off, “He’s my husband, Father. He’s staying right here.”

I caress his palm with my thumb, and he relaxes.

“How are you?” my mother asks, fresh tears gathering in her eyes.

“I’m good. Just want to go home.”

“No,” both Cameron and my father say simultaneously. I laugh, hissing at the sudden pain.

“Violet...” Cameron says with an undertone of warning and deep adoration. My parents and Cameron continue talking, but I close my eyes.

When I open them again, my parents and sister are gone, and my other family is here: Aurora, Kieran and their boy, Chiara, Cato, and their daughter, and Alessandra, Hayden and their daughter.
