Chiara sweeps her gaze from Cameron to me. “So, you two have to settle things sooner rather than later. Sorry, but I have never seen two people so uncomfortable with each other. No one will buy your act.”

Cameron drags a hand through his hair. “She’s...”

“A freak?” I ask, and they chuckle.

“Do you have super hearing?” Cameron grumbles.

“Yes, especially when it comes to insensitive jackasses like you.”

We’re trapped in a staring contest that ends when Aurora says, “You’ll fit right in.”

I take a step back. “It was nice meeting you all.”

“Go hide. I will find you.” The threat, delivered in that husky voice of his, sends a shiver of excitement and apprehension down my spine.

“You’re awful, really,” says Aurora.

Cameron shrugs. “It worked for you.”

I leave them, feeling even more disoriented, and find my parents.

“Please,” I beg. Perhaps they see my desperation—that I can no longer seem to control my muscles. They nod, and I rush upstairs.

When I close the door behind me, everything in me trembles. What if I caught something? Thinking about the consequences for my sister paralyzes me. I can’t put her in that situation again. What have I done?

After shedding my clothes, I run to the shower. I rub at my skin until it reddens, and small blisters form under the scalding water.

I use a small bottle of disinfectant, and the bathroom stinks with the heavy smell of antiseptic.

I am clean. My room is clean. I don’t think I can do this.

I crawl into my bed, letting tears roll down my face.

In the Rolls Royce Cullinan, I pin my friends with a glare. Like bricks on a sky tower, Violet’s issues stack up high. Yet, there’s something about her—that hint of mystery, that sweet voice. One second, I want to slaughter her damn fears; the next, I want to shield her from all harm—the little freak. Done with analyzing whatever she ignites in me, I blurt, “She’s not my type.”

Kieran is the first to respond. “The sooner you get over it, the better.”

I bend over and ball my hands at my sides. “How should I do that?”

In a soft voice, Alessandra answers, “With patience.”

“We all saw the same woman, right? She’s mental, for fuck’s sake.”

“Cam.” This comes from my sister.

My mind goes to Violet, those pouty lips, and how they hugged that fork. I might be a monster, but I wouldn’t touch her knowing how she reacts in utter panic. She’s like nothing I have ever experienced. It’s intriguing and annoying.

“I had one fucking wish for my marriage.”

All three of the guys shift in their seats. The assholes know I would rather fuck a tree than her.

“I think she’s charming,” says Chiara.

“Please, do tell.”

She rolls her eyes at me. “I never thought I’d see the day when the great Cameron McNamara wasn’t up for a challenge.”

“It’s not that easy,” Alessandra chips in. I don’t know if I should thank her for taking my side or stating that it’s impossible.
