“And cranky . . . that poor woman.”

“Hilarious.”

“There’s always sacrifices to be made.”

I nod and squeeze her shoulder on my way out in silent support. “Come up with a plausible story for the vultures to believe about my sudden marriage.”

“I got you.”

This woman is indispensable. Wrapping things up, I leave the office and head to the compound.

When I enter the conference room, Kieran, Cato, and Hayden are going through documents and pictures on the table.

“I’m getting married next month,” I inform them.

“Lauren on it?” Kieran asks.

I give him the side-eye.

“Good. Now let’s fucking find something and take down these sneaky bastards.”

“Violet,” my father says from behind the door.

I drag myself out of bed and open the door.

“We need to talk,” he says. The bags under his eyes make me nervous.

Talking is a simple concept, yet my body trembles as I follow him. If I learned anything in the past few weeks, things shift and get uncomfortable whenever my father wants to talk.

He closes the door to his office. My mother offers me a small, tight-lipped smile.

This is not good.

I turn back and dart toward the door, more on instinct than anything, but my father is leaning against it as if he knew I would take this route. He gestures for the couch.

“Everything we do is for you.”

“That would be a lie.”

“Violet,” my mother says, disappointment and hurt strangling her vocal cords.

“But it’s true. I was fine. More than fine. I do what I love and make my own money.” I fist my hands at my sides, avoiding their glances and staring out the window.

“What is it this time?”

My father walks toward his desk and slumps in his leather chair.

“I talked to Cameron. He set the wedding date for next month.”

“I . . . No . . . I can’t do that.”

“You can and you will.”

“This is too fast.” I thought I had more time for my brain to accept things I can’t change.

“You’ll move in with him after the wedding.”

An entire building metaphorically drops on my head, crushing me under it. My heart threatens to explode out of my chest, and my hands turn clammy. I swallow, blinking at my parents.
