And this is how Cameron finds me frozen in the middle of the room, holding my hands up, with the men rooted in one place at the entrance, clearly not knowing what to do.

“Violet.” His deep voice pushes through the fog, and I blink at him. “Come to me.”

I mouth, “I can’t.”

He orders his men, “Take the boxes to the next room and unpack.” As he approaches me, I exhale and drop to my knees.

“You know . . . this . . . I . . .”

He kneels before me and says, “These men would give their lives to save yours.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to gain some semblance of composure. When he touches a strand of my wig, I whip my face to him.

“Good. Now that I have your attention, let me explain how things will be in this house.”

My heart pounds, and he continues, “You will get used to every single one of them, and you will go outside every day.”

“No.” My voice is shaky, just like my entire body. He can’t do that to me.

“If you think you will stay in your room and vegetate...”

“I don’t vegetate. I have work to do.”

His eyes shimmer with disbelief. “As what?”

As what? Why is he asking stupid questions? Fine, take this arrogant asshole. From now on, I will always refer to him as the big AA. It’s as if my body forgot the stress and instead, I jerk my chin to him. “I am a professional gamer.”

Nothing has ever felt better than seeing surprise transform his face as he plops down on his ass.

“I’m ranked number ten in the world. Ah, and when I’m not playing, I make video games.”

“You . . . you’re a gamer?”

“And I need that room to put my equipment in. I won’t comply with your requests. I’m too busy for that.”

Cameron puts his hands over his knees, his fingers long and thick. What would they feel like on my skin? Domineering? Possessive?

Probably like scalding lava.

He cocks his head to the side, and amusement replaces the surprise. “Thank you for telling me that.”

I feel my eyebrows drawing together as he inches toward me, our lips nearly brushing. I’m torn between sheer panic and a morsel of curiosity.

“You have to do as I say now.”

Did I ever think he was beautiful? He is hideous, with the ugliest heart and the most fucked up character.

“I’ll tell you exactly what I expect from you, and you’ll deliver.”

“Or what?”

“Or you won’t get near your precious games.”

“You can’t do that.”

“That depends on you.”

Seething, I watch as he pushes up to stand. “Dinner is in an hour.”
